Default mystery debt collector calling work phone

This has happened repeatedly. I never answer the phones here at work, the receptionist does, then she calls over the intercom that there is a call for me on line 5 (this is the only line they ever call on), when I pick up, I hear the autodial saying "this is a call from CTC( i think, could be CPC OR CDC....) this is an attempt to collect a debt, if you are xxxx xxxxx (me) please press one, when I press one the call disconnects!!!!

This is harrassment!

Besides the point that they are calling my work phone and clearly telling third parties that they are attempting to collect a debt from ME, then the call disconnects! I have no idea who this is, and not sure how to find out.

I googled CTC.... this comes up with a canadian collection agency, and then some threads saying they are an internet lender, aka payday loan type place, I know I have never utilized anything of that sort.

Any ideas of how to find out who these people are so I can sue them for fdcpa violations?!

Don't press 1...either hang on and see if someone picks up, or press 0000000 until someone picks up. (Might work...depends)

You might also ask the receptionist to "screen" all your calls..."He's unavailable at the moment, can I get a number and he'll call you back."

I will try waiting without pressing one and I will try pressing 0

The other one won't work because there is never a live person on the phone, it is just a recorded message that replays over and over. Once I press "1" as instructed then it disconnects.

If your receptionist hears "this is an attempt to collect a debt", then that is a flagrant violation of the FDCPA. You might even ask the phone company for a list of incoming calls or at least complain to them about TCPA violations.

Tell the receptionist that any call without a real person in conversation is likely a scam, and to just hang up. NO ONE at the company would want to play the button pressing game with some computer that called them.

If by chance she is hearing a real person, ask her to ask them for a phone number to call back on. Then google the number if she gets one.

Well they called again today.

Following your advice willingtocope I pressed another number besides the one they told me to, and sure enough a representative came on the line.

This guy was a piece of work, but I did get their info, apparently they are a collection agency working on behalf of a JDB lol anyways, i have enough info to send a debt validation letter and start adding up the FDCPA violations that pile up after.

This could be fun

Now that you have spoken to them on the phone, they have made "initial contact" with you. They now have 5 days to send you a letter. I would wait for that letter before sending them a DV letter.

Also, this was your opportunity to inform them that your employer does not permit you to take such calls at work, and they are not to call you at work again. That will stop the calls at work, and any future calls are a clear FDCPA violation.

Good luck,
DH
