From the discussion boards today…can’t add much since this poster said it all.
“I work in Loss Prevention for a sizable retailer. Today, I get a call that a lady believes her wallet was stolen. Now, usually it’s they’ve misplaced it, such as leaving it in their car, so I just rolled my eyes and went to meet with the lady.
“Lady paid for her purchases with her debit card. She took her receipt and put it with her checkbook and when she took her purchases to her car, she realized her purse seemed lighter. Looked and saw her wallet was missing. Went back to the lane and talked to a cashier - they couldn’t find it.
“I review video and I can see that she left the wallet sitting on the ledge next to where the credit card swiping machine is. The people in line behind her (a lady in her mid 50’s and her daughter, mid 20’s), put their purchases on the belt and start taking the bagged merchandise to put in the cart. The older lady sees the wallet sitting there and takes it. They exit, and the lady is clearly holding the wallet in her hand.
“All this happened within a span of 5 minutes. While we gathered the information from the victim, she had her social security card, her husbands SS card, 2 credit cards, $150 in cash, her checking account number that has over $19,000 in it because they just financed a car today, and tons more stuff that she should have.
“Policeman and I give her an education on what to carry in her wallet, how identity theft occurs and to put fraud alerts on all her CR’s, along with her husbands. Victim is very grateful that we gave her this information.
“It just amazes me that people aren’t informed about this - especially the way ID theft is discussed in the media. My SS card is under lock and key at my house, along with my passport and birth certificate.
“I also suggested she might not want to carry that sizable amount of cash with her. The police officer and I also believe that the lady that took it saw it as a crime of opportunity, and isn’t necessarily a career criminal. But with the way things are, some people let greed get the best of them.”
