Sure, learning to spend less money when you are trying to get out of debt is pretty important. But just spending less won’t guarantee success. Here are some other things you need to do:

  1. Get your finances under control - This means you need to know pretty precisely what is coming in money-wise, what is going out and how much you have in savings. You need to have a system for monitoring your money.
  2. Plan your spending - How much are you going to spend on groceries, gas, utilities, clothes, etc. each month? And need we say it? You need to stick to your plan.
  3. Have an emergency fund. If you don’t have “crisis” money, you are setting yourself up for failure if you have unexpected medical bills or your car needs repairs.
  4. Learn how to motivate yourself This stuff isn’t easy and getting out of debt takes time. You need to commit to the long haul and find ways to keep going. Learn to reward yourself.
  5. Increase Income This is the obvious solution, but maybe also the most difficult one to take on. You may be saying to yourself: “I’m already working full-time to make ends meet. How am I going to take on another job?” Getting another job isn’t the only option. Think outside the box. You may be able to start a small business online, for instance. Can you just do something for extra money just a few extra hours a week? This will probably take extensive brainstorming, but is vital to your success.

Here’s a great article which goes over these points in detail. If you have other tips, please share them with us by leaving a comment.

You are so right. It all seems so simple, but requires much dicipline. The credit companies make it so easy to spend, that the simple task of spending wisely is made more difficult. It took me several years to dig out. Now the credit card companies call me a deadbeat because I only spend what I can pay off at the end of the month. Isn’t that ironic, LOL.
