The difficult times associated with recession can leave parents feeling desperate. If you are struggling to provide for the needs of your children, chances are that you don’t have the resources for getting professional help. Also, there are only so many tips you can read for finding a job or saving money in your home budget. Try these ideas as a healthy alternative to the financial stress of being a parent.

Every parent should find reward in a pleasurable hobby. A timeless idea involves taking up a hobby, old or new. Break out your arts and craft supplies or your sewing machine. Other ideas include tooling around in your wood shop or doing improvements to your boat, motorcycle, or automobile. Home improvement offers thousands of potential activities, from repainting to re-landscaping. A hobby takes you away from stress. Many hobbies cost nothing, especially if you already have the necessary supplies.

Exercise is another stress reliever. In good times and bad, shaping up your body helps to relieve the stress in your mind. Remember that endorphins resulting from exercise can be addictive. While you can turn to exercise for relief, don’t let exercise become an obsession that clouds your mind from meeting other responsibilities.

Rekindle your love life. Parents in relationships can focus on rediscovering what they love about their partner. You might be surprised that your partner suffers similar stress about the economy and providing for children. Sex is a great way to relieve stress. Research has shown that making love to your partner lowers blood pressure, reduces the number of headches, and there is a possible connection to decreased risk of heart disease and cancer.

Get involved with your church or charity. Going out and helping people, socializing with them, and taking your mind off your financial problems are free activities. If the place you normally go puts too much of a strain on your fuel allowance, you can find another place closer to home to become involved.

Read for pleasure or for your educational benefit.
You might be surprised how little you read when it isn’t for work or for your child’s schoolwork. Thousands of tomes await you at your local library. The library is also a great way to spend time with your kids. Another terrific aspect of libraries is that they lend books for free.

Don’t feel stressed about being stressed! Some people feel it’s a character flaw if they are not able to cope with whatever poker hand life deals them.  This is nonsense, it’s normal to feel anxious or even worried over finances. Rather than trying to be Superman or Superwoman, confide in a trusted family member or friend.  You might be surprised at the relief you’ll feel – and you may find out that you’re not the only worried one!    By keeping yourself mentally and physically strong, you put yourself in a better position to meet the demands of your family.

Make sure you get plenty of sleep. Getting enough sleep improves decision making and relieves stress and  improves your physical health so you can earn those much-needed dollars.  Sure, you say, but my finances are keeping me up at night!  There are some things which hinder sleep: drinking alcohol or beverages containing caffeine in the afternoon or evening, exercising close to bedtime, following an irregular morning and nighttime schedule, and working or doing other mentally intense activities right before or after getting into bed can disrupt sleep.   Take it easy on yourself.
