More Money Savings Tips

This is sort of a hodge-podge of money savings tips, some you may have seen, some you may not.  What I like about them is most do not require any extra effort or sacrifice, just a change in habits.

Always Free Telephone Directory Service
Dialing 1-800-411-FREE will connect you with a site which will give you the number you need. You will have to listen to an advertisement which pays for this service, but it’s a little annoyance that could be worth it.

Dryer Tip
Throw a DRY bathtowel in your clothes dryer–always. A towel in the dryer cuts down dryer time. It absorbs extra moisture out of the clothes and the time it cuts down in drying time can be 1/3-1/2. Try it!

Second Dryer Tip – Save on Fabric Softener Sheets
Those dryer sheets are not only bad for the environment, but they are expensive as well.  Instead of using them, dip a wash cloth in a 50-50 solution of fabric softener& water and put it in with the rest of the clothes in the dryer.

Online Home Energy Saver Audit
The Environmental Energy Technologies Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has put out this online energy audit, free to consumers.   Filling out the form can give you ideas for various energy upgrades for your home. Are you taking advantage of all the energy saving options out there? This survey will help you find out.

Cheap Effective Teeth Whitener
The original toothpaste was baking soda, and besides providing good teeth cleaning properties, it does whiten your teeth.  It’s way less expensive than other whitening methods, but since it does not contain fluoride, you’ll need to supplement its use with regular toothpaste.  It’s not the best tasting stuff, but you can get used to it.  Just wet your toothbrush and dip it into the baking soda and brush as usual.

Save on Microsoft Office

Sun Microsystems has a free product that you can use to edit and read any Microsoft document, called open office.  There is a version for most any computer operating system.  You can download it free at:

openoffice.org

Low Cost or Free Health Insurance for Veterans
Hundreds of thousands of eligible Veterans have never applied and/or used their health care benefits that they have earned from their service. More information is available at www.va.gov. Children and spouses of veterans may also be qualified to apply for the services.

Buy Eggs in Quantity and Freeze
Did you know that eggs freeze effectively?  If you see a great deal, buy in quantity, freeze in ice cubes and transfer to a plastic bag or container for long term cold storage.

Multiple Uses of Vinegar

  • Rubbing a little vinegar on your block of cheese will keep down the mold.
  • Use vinegar & baking soda in your mop water. Bugs hate the taste and will leave your house.
  • You can use vinegar and water to wash your windows for a fraction of the cost of other window cleaners – it actually does a better job and you’re being “green”, too.
