Want to get your refund quickly? Save money on postage, printing and even tax preparation? You can get some relief through a new IRS program! The IRS is offering free tax filing through the internet this year for those people with less than $56,000 adjusted gross income. They are offering two separate options: You can fill out the forms yourself and file electronically them through the IRS website, or use a company who has partnered with the IRS, answer questions online and file your tax return that way.
There are 20 separate companies partnering with the IRS, including three that have a Spanish option. Many of the companies include provisions for Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief. Others even do your tax preparation for you, free of charge, by asking you a series of questions.
Basic Guidelines:
- The IRS will begin accepting e-filed returns Jan. 16.
- The 2009 Free File program also begins Jan. 16.
- To use Free File this year, your 2008 adjusted gross income must be $56,000 or less.
- The income cut-off applies regardless of your filing status. This means even if you are filing as married, your total income cannot exceed $56,000.
- 20 tax software companies are part of Free File 2009.
- Three companies are offering Free File products in Spanish.
- You can e-file your return at any time and schedule any payment of taxes due for a later date, up to the April 15 deadline.
- This season the IRS introduces a new way to e-file regardless of income with fillable forms.
- Access Free File only by going to the IRS Web site, www.IRS.gov, and clicking on the Free File icon.
From the IRS Free File webpage, here is the list of companies that you can use to prepare your taxes online and file them free. If this list is overwhelming, click on the previous link and there is a form you can fill out which will show all of the companies application to your state and filing status.

I don’t think it will be a good idea for me to file taxes in fear that a junk debt collection agency will garnish my return. My hopes is to file an answer the the (summons) complaint within 30 days so that I don’t get a default judgement–again. I was so crippled last time and last time I had a right to fight it, but was too afraid to fight an old debt that had long been clocked out. Seriously, two years ago, I would not been able to get help from a lawyer or an online community like this. I wish I did then.
