Recession Proof Careers

There have been all kinds of these lists published lately, and we thought we’d just add one more to the blogosphere. Here is our laundry list of recession-proof careers:

Education
Math and science teachers will be in demand as the U.S. struggles to compete with other countries in engineering, technology, and medicine. A growing immigrant population means more English-as-a-second-language classes will be needed.

Energy
We’re not talking green energy here. Regular infrastructure jobs, such as installing and maintaining electrical power lines, technicians at power plants, will also be in demand. The real boost will come from the new administration’s commitment to a more efficient national energy system.

Environment
OK, now we are talking about green energy. While many of the lists out there say that green energy is the field to get into – others say this field is overrated. The general public, despite the economy, is still very interested in going green. In my opinion, it just depends on what kind of tax incentives are being passed, and how easy a company makes it for the average Joe to do green things. Here is an article which goes over the all the top possible green jobs.

Financial Services
You think we’re kidding, right? Well, people need someplace to put their money now that all of the rules seem to have changed. Financial advisers will still be in demand. Businesses and consumers will still need accountants and auditors. True, if you were a stock broker, your future may be a little less bright.

Health Care
Even in the economic environment, people are still going to get sick. (Or maybe they will be sick as a result of the economic crisis?) All of us are getting older and living longer, sometimes with chronic health conditions. What’s more, health insurance practices may undergo a radical revision during the Obama administration, which has announced plans to address three central issues: coverage, cost, and quality of care.

Car Repair Businesses
So what if GM and Chrysler go under? Someone has to work on the millions of vehicles out there if there are no dealerships. Even if the car manufacturers stay in business, many people are holding on to their cars longer. In addition, there may be opportunities for entrepreneurs to manufacture parts for American cars.

Technology
The internet and the use of computers is not going to decline any time soon. The internet is not just a luxury, it is mandatory in many business. People who can set up networks, repair computers and program software will always be in demand.

What do you think? Did we forget one? Tell us!
