OK, I have to admit, I saw a similar blog/article title on another popular website quite some time ago, and I filed the idea away as a good topic (I didn’t even read the post as I recall). In fact, the reason it caught my attention is that the now “aged” link to this article proudly cited that it was “the most clicks/reads” on the site, thus I assumed there must be something interesting to read there.
At the moment, here I sit- single mom, actually sitting on a park bench as I compose this blog post- wondering how I’m going to make ends meet and finish my assignments I’ve committed to this week given there are only 24 hours in a day (the reason I’m working at a park bench while my kid plays). Perhaps that is a good tie-in to my subject– how many people are picking up pennies now that the economy is so tight, that perhaps would have passed them by only a year or so back??
Well, to start, I think due to inflation we’ll have to change “penny” to nickel. Even in the current recession-laden environment our country is languishing through in 2009, I’m afraid the only group of society that may still expend the energy to retrieve a penny is the one that my kindergardner belongs to– translation, kiddo’s perhaps 10 or younger (and ten may even be pushing it!!).
So, where is this thread going, anyway?
To answer the question using technically correct analysis methods an experiment was performed. We glued a penny to the sidewalk not far from the ticket window of a popular spring training baseball stadium facility. Also adhered was a nickel, and a quarter in the nearby vicinity. I then settled back for some formal data collection (and laughs). It wasn’t difficult, since at the time I worked part-time selling tickets at the window….
So I bet you want to hear the results of my scientific experiment? Well, I will say, the penny was sadly ignored by all but but the smallest (or scraggliest) of baseball fans. The nickel, when spotted, got a fair amount of attention.. but the quarter… well, it didn’t stand a chance– as soon as a fan who wasn’t embarrassed to whip out their keys (5 minutes time) and hack away at the glue until it was released (30 seconds time) fell right in there…. and then it was gone!!
So, readers, it begs the question to you– if you saw a penny, would you pick it up??
