Disputing Credit Report Item Updates the Information Or Deletes It?

Many people new to credit repair ask the following question:

Q. If I find inaccurate info on an item that is mine will it come off permanently or will they just update/correct the info? Example – if I had a collection that is reporting a wrong date or dollar amount and I write to them saying that item is inaccurate due to the incorrect amount, will they delete the item or just update the information?

A. You’ve just stumbled upon a secret trick in the credit repair process. You may or may not know that sometimes it takes several rounds of disputes to get a negative listing off of your credit report. You can re-dispute an item with the credit bureaus as many times as you like as long as you give a different reason for the dispute each time.

Here’s the trick: Sometimes a credit bureau will not be able to verify information within the listing and will then yank the whole negative account off of your credit report. Even if your high balance is correct on a credit card listing, but you dispute the date the account was open and the credit bureau cannot verify the date, sometimes the whole listing will disappear.

Intrigued? Here is a whole possible list of items within a negative listing which you can dispute to remove a listing from your credit report:

  1. Not mine (not my account)
  2. I didn’t pay late that month
  3. Wrong amount
  4. Wrong account number
  5. Wrong original creditor
  6. Wrong Charge-off Date
  7. Wrong Date of Last Activity
  8. Wrong Balance
  9. Wrong Credit limit
  10. Wrong Status (there are about 20)
  11. Wrong High Credit (the highest amount you used)

Remember, it is never illegal to dispute anything on your credit report. Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, it is always your legal right to request an investigation. Anyone else used this idea successfully? Leave us a comment.

Very interesting…the bureaus will tell you that it’s illegal for a credit repair company to tell consumers that ” items reporting accurately can be deleted”. This may be the case…however, as you have written, it is never illegal to dispute anything on your credit report. IMHO, they (the bureaus) want consumers to think that they cannot remove anything reporting accurately even if the furnisher of information can not validate or prove that the item belongs to you! We know that this is grounds for having the item deleted of course!

Undeniably believe that which you said. Your favorite reason appeared to be on the web the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people consider worries that they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
