Getting something for nothing, especially in the economy we are facing today, is a huge score! And with so many Americans finding themselves unemployed with “time on their hands”, this blog post subject seems very timely, useful and appropriate.

But on to the good news. A website called universitiesandcolleges.org has created an incredibly huge, very cool master list of free online courses sponsored by various academic institutions. According to the website:

This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date collection of free online college classes available to the general public. We’ll be updating this list frequently, so please bookmark it for future reference and let us know about any broken links or free online courses we’ve missed. See also our collection of Free Language Learning Resources.

Checking out all the potential classes available is like a kid going into a candy store (for academics, anyway). But there is truly something there for every educational flavor, guaranteed. Especially if you are one of the unlucky many that are finding themselves lining up in the unemployment office, why not use this opportunity to learn something you’ve always found intriguing but never quite had the time or inclination to follow through on?

Browsing through the list of what is available is overwhelming! John Hopkins university offers everything from HIV/AIDS, to Aging to an Adolescent Health Class. If you are a techy, there is everything from Rocket Propulsion to Quantum Computations. History Buff? Might want to check out “A Hell of a Storm: The Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Birth of the Republican Party, 1854-55″.

Of course, you do not actually get college credit for the classes, taking free online courses is not the same as an actual paid enrollment in the class. Your study is self-directed and you won’t earn credits toward a degree. But the good part is that homework and exams are optional!

And why not take advantage of the free “pursuit of knowlege” — what do you say, readers, pretty cool, no?!
