If you are looking to get out of debt, there are a number of paths you can take: a better job, entrepreneurship or you may decide to reduce your existing spending habits. However you decide to do it, the path toward financial freedom is less important than the plan.
You can’t become debt free by taking a magic pill or hiring someone to take care of it for you. Like dieting, you must make a lifestyle change to not only lose your debt, but keep it off. Here are the basic lifestyle changes which much be implemented:
Any debt reduction plan begins with a commitment. You must be committed and realize that you will have to make sacrifices.
Analyze your finances. You’d be amazed how many people have no idea where their money goes. If you don’t want to go through the tedious effort of writing down everything you spend – review your checking account or credit card statements. You can get a really good idea of where your money is going by reviewing the items charged on your computerized statement.
Actually write down your goals, including a time frame. This is a clichéd piece of advice when dealing with goals, but it is clichéd for a reason – it works. Your plan must have two elements—consideration and participation.
Is it at all possible to get your debt reduced through debt settlement? Many credit card companies are willing to reduce your balances by as much as 60% if you merely call customer service and ASK. Some of them are even willing to reduce the interest rate down to 0% and accept payments over 2-3 years.
Revisit your goals once a month. Financial discipline is often difficult to maintain. Tracking progress is one way to keep motivated. If you have a significant other, sit down together to map the progress on your plan. If you have older children, you might consider including them in some of these planning sessions. It’s a good way to teach them about money.
Be gentle with yourself if you make a mistake or veer off track. Sometimes you may have an emergency, for instance a car repair, and you can’t put away the money you planned this month. No one is perfect. Just resolve to stay the course next month.
