In our “Warnings About Hiring Credit Repair Agencies,” we recommend contacting the FTC if you suspect you are a victim of credit repair fraud. As one recent settlement proves, the FTC will step in and take necessary action against those violating your rights as a consumer. After two years since filing its lawsuit against them, the FTC has successfully settled a case against the shady, family-run operation,  Clean Credit Report Services, Inc.

Clean Credit Reports Services, Inc., has been found guilty of:
  • Making false claims that they could remove negative information from consumer credit reports despite the accuracy and timeliness of said items
  • Debiting $400 from consumer bank accounts before contracts had been received or services provided
  • Failing to follow through with promises to take action to clean up consumer credit
For these offenses, Ricardo A. Miranda, Ruthy Villabona, and their son, Daniel R. Miranda have a $14.4 million judgement against them. Since they do not have the means to cover the cost, this judgement will be suspended in exchange for the family turning over what assets they do have, including $165,000 in cash, and proceeds from the sale of several properties and vehicles.

Though we advise against it in favor of repairing your credit yourself, if you are considering a credit repair agency avoid any company that:
  • Wants you to pay for credit repair services before any services are provided
  • Does not tell you your legal rights and what you can do – yourself – for free
  • Recommends that you not contact a credit bureau directly
  • Advises you to dispute all information in your credit report or take any action that seems illegal, such as creating a new credit identity – if you follow illegal advice and commit fraud, you may be subject to prosecution

Do yourself a favor and opt for the DIY credit repair. In addition to our Free Credit Repair Guide, our online resources here at Credit Infocenter include a suggested schedule for staying on task, and numerous articles on the subject, including “The 5 Biggest Mistakes People Make in Repairing Their Credit.”
