In our “Warnings About Hiring Credit Repair Agencies,” we recommend contacting the FTC if you suspect you are a victim of credit repair fraud. As one recent settlement proves, the FTC will step in and take necessary action against those violating your rights as a consumer. After two years since filing its lawsuit against them, the FTC has successfully settled a case against the shady, family-run operation, Clean Credit Report Services, Inc.
- Making false claims that they could remove negative information from consumer credit reports despite the accuracy and timeliness of said items
- Debiting $400 from consumer bank accounts before contracts had been received or services provided
- Failing to follow through with promises to take action to clean up consumer credit
- Wants you to pay for credit repair services before any services are provided
- Does not tell you your legal rights and what you can do – yourself – for free
- Recommends that you not contact a credit bureau directly
- Advises you to dispute all information in your credit report or take any action that seems illegal, such as creating a new credit identity – if you follow illegal advice and commit fraud, you may be subject to prosecution
