  3. How can they sell our infomation? Ahh. Therein lies the nugget of the issue. It is not "your" information. It is information about you but you don't own it. The CRA gathered it and massaged it and they own it and they can use it any way they desire within the constraints of the law. All your can do is to 'opt-out' -- which means that you instruct the CRA to not sell your name for marketing purposes. The consumer does not get a vote on anything that falls under the 'permissible purpose' rule. As has been pointed out, the CRAs are a business. They exist to make a profit. The CRAs want their clients to be happy. Happy clients means more revenue. Their profits come largely from the credit card companies and other original creditors. Collection agencies are minor revenue sources. Some consider CRAs to be creatures of evil. I don't have any opinion one way or the other. But, think for a minute what the credit market would be like if the CRAs did not exist. It would be like going back a hundred years in time. There would be no central clearinghouse of credit history. Anyone desirous of extending credit would require a lengthy list of references which they would then contact to check out your background. The cost of obtaining credit would be significantly higher and the availability of credit would be much more restricted than today. Now that I think about it, that is not such a bad idea and our country would be much more stable and safer without our addiction to easy credit that drives consumption far beyond our means. If the CRA is doing something wrong, then exercise your rights under the law. Otherwise, as has already been suggested, just don't play the game of the credit card companies and the consumer credit market in general. None of us really need all that credit. It was what got us into trouble in the first place.

  5. Hang onto your copies of the PFD letters, and just be patient. It's a slow game ... anybody in a hurry loses.

  6. Bumping works for both Equifax and Transunion. I bumped off all the equifax inquires and even had a spit file in the process. I got that fixed and i have continued to bump-- down to 2 on TU (one from 2 days ago). I will pull once per week once the TU inquires are gone.
