kb9tbq
Adsoft, I recommend that you definitely read the debt consolidation section here!!! Especially Dark04s case, there are a few other here also (one in mortgage section). They are having real bad problems, using these companies will come back to bite you in the fact that they usually only settle after all accounts have been charged off (and notices to appear in court are bing served). They are not in the business of being mindful of your credit, they are very bad - run away fast! smogtek
adsoft,I spoke with one of their "counselors" and had some email correspondence with him.I was considering using them to settle a judgment that was the last item on my report. They want an upfront "origination fee" or something like that PLUS a 15% commission on what they "SAVE" you! For example: You owe $10,000, they settle it for $4,000, you pay 15% of the $6,000 they "saved" you which is $900 + the $450 origination and some other stuff. They also said they "usually" don't accept anyone with less than $10,000 in debts. What really put me off, beside the outrageous fee structure, was the fact that I had told this guy my situation on the phone and in email, but he still didn't seem to understand. This is not the type of company/person I would want handling my money/credit.Ended up contacting the creditor and settling myself for about 40%!HTH

Settle it my self, except I don't really have any bargaining power if the come after me. Hey SmogTek,How did you first contact the creditor regarding the judgement? Did you make payments or a lumped sum?I'm afraid to call them because they might want to play hard ball.
smogtek
ad,Sorry for the delay. Just got back from CO (Colorado not Charge Off).In my case when I called the number for the OC it was no longer them. They had been sold three times!I just told them I had a judgment that I had just found out about. They gave me a 40% offer right up front. I told them I'd like to think about it. I called back and offered 27%, they countered with 34% and I agreed. I then went to one of their branches, gave them the full amount in cash which they turned into a cashier's check which they sent to their main office.I'm still waiting for the satisfaction of judgment papers, but we got our home some I'm being patient.HTHMatt

Dark04
hi! I'm the one mentioned above who used a debt settlement co and now I'm up to my ears in problems (including a summons from one of the OC's they were supposed to handle) either way, for me...the hardest part was picking up that phone and making that first contact to start talking settlement. *yikes* but I looked at it this way and got through it: no matter how big and bad the OC staff sounds....they all eat and sleep and play the same way we all do. they ARE human! mention you looked into a debt settlement company and they will probably work even harder to help you settle! *L* (I'm sure all the OC's are aware of the debt settlement companies and know once you get involved with them you're more likely to head for bk) just my two cents worth
