Discover Updated

As a lot of you know, I settled with Discover recently. Then I disputed it as "not mine" and it's still under investigation with EQ and TU and EX deleted it (on DH's report, EX verified.) Here's my problem. As of yesterday, they've updated their listing. The problem is that they're saying that I still owe them 795 bucks! I don't know what to do about this. Should I write an angry letter to Discover saying that we agreed to a settlement, I paid it and my CR should show a zero balance? I put a restrictive endorsement on the check but I forgot to make a copy of it (stupid, I know.) Should I hit the CRAs again with another dispute (maybe say "incorrect balance")? Any advice would be appreciated.

You might wanna wait till you get your cancelled check back.

Well, even if you forgot to make a copy of the check, you should be able to get a copy from your bank. Even if you don't have the kind of checking account that sends you back the checks ( I know they charge a freaking arm and a leg for it ) you should still be able to call the bank and get a copy of the check for like 2$. I'm pretty sure they have to keep them on file for a while...I've gotten checks up to 2 years old this way.

Now this settlement agreement....was it in writing or just a verbal with the check endorsement? If you've got the agreement in writing, I'de say a letter to the CRA's with a copy of that'de be a slam dunk.

Do you get the cancelled check returned to you? I would track that down so you have it. Did you get the settlement agreement in writing as well? It would probably be easier as far as the balance is concerned to first raise hell with Discover. If you just want those tradelines deleted then keep doing what you are doing through the CRAs. Definitely make sure that Discover is not showing a balance because you don't want to be later fighting a CA on your report, courtesy of Discover.

I paid with a cashier's check so the only canceled check that's going to be returned to me is the one I used to pay for the cashier's check. I've got the settlement agreement from Discover and the letter that I included with the check. I suppose it's obvious that they got the money, because they're not still showing that I owe them $4096. Ideally, I'd like for the TL to just be deleted but at least if it's updated with a zero balance, I'll still be able to get a house.

Do you have online account access with Discover? Any statements showing the amount of the payment made? Can you check through their phone system? If any of these shows a payment for the amount agreed to by the date agreed to then it should be a pretty clear case for Discover to change what they have on their records.

How long ago was this settled? It often takes two months, sometimes a little longer, for the settlement to be accurately reflected on your credit reports. TU always seems to be the slowest for me.

It was about two months ago. The balance they're reporting would be accurate if I hadn't made the settlement agreement and just mailed them a check. The account's been charged off for a VERY long time so I'm not getting any statements in the mail any more (I highly doubt I have online access to my account.)

When I settled with Discover the first change on my CRs was the amount of the payment deducted from the total balance. Around a month later or so the balance was changed to $0. This has been the case with all of the accounts I have settled. It will first show the payment being deducted, and then maybe the next month the $0 balance should show. I don't think you have anything to worry about yet. ;)

I may end up going that route, but am afraid it will really hurt my credit history. My Discover was from 1995, as well as an MBNA I just settled on a few months back.
