30 point drop due to an old unpaid CO being deleted

That's because it's adding tenure to your files and age is an important factor in the scoring calculation. However, you should really focus on the actual data that is on your files and attempt to have that as clean as possible. Creditors look not only at the score but also the information contained in there and charge offs and collections are never viewed upon favorable. Once you're done cleaning up your files and rebuilding credit by making timely payments, your score will become higher as well.
