We require your fingerprint

Recommended Posts

Some of you may have read the thread I started over at creditnet, now ive a question for any of you legal folks out here.

If a retailer refuses me services on the basis that I will not allow them to take my fingerprint during a credit card transaction, would there be any grounds for a civil suit against them??

Ive contacted Visa International and they have stated that anyone who accepts credit cards may not ask you for fingerprints, that they may ask for approiate I.D. only.

A local credit card insider states this fingerprint issue is not a new problem and about a dozen or so years ago, thumb prints were commonly applied to personal checks by merchants. Eventually the same merchants started imprinting credit card receipts as well at least those that were not above the $50 authorization limit. No ID, fingerprints or phone numbers need be taken when an authorization number has been obtained. Also, merchants would also be in violation of their merchant agreements if they were to impose minimums or surcharges on purchases. Merchants CAN however give discounts when cash is used!

OH yes I remember the fingerprint and the check days. Bank One was taking fingerprints when you were cashing a payroll check - EVEN AFTER you presented them with a valid state ID or DL...

And if you think Big Brother doesn't have that print somewhere on file, I'd think again...gg
