techgoddess
This sounds like a job for the old Goodwill letter. Send them a letter saying that you fell behind making payments due to some catastrophic event (unemployment, illness, death in the family, whatever) and that you've since made timely payments and you would appreciate it greatly if they would remove the negative entries from your credit report because you're now trying to raise your score to buy a house or whatever. Stress that you've been a loyal customer for however many years and you've appreciated their great customer service (use whatever verbage you'd like to kiss their butt). As far as the accounts you've closed, I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about it. You might be able to try a goodwill letter for that too, but they may make you reapply as opposed to re-opening your account. I think Rainbowspal had some success with Nordstroms. A good way to send goodwill letters is through Planetfeedback.com. It's free.

techgoddess
I think there was a goodwill letter somewhere but since we lost a lot of posts with the new discussion board software, it might be a while before you can find them. Maybe someone will post one. I don't have the one I used here but my situation was different anyway so it probably wouldn't help you (and I can't be sure how effective it is since I haven't gotten a response yet.) If I were you, I would just write a letter myself and maybe post it here before you send it out so everyone can take a look at it and give you suggestions.
