FREE credit report?! Not from EQ...

So, under the FCRA, we're entitled to a free copy of our credit report if we've been denied credit in the prior 60 days.

Technology being what it is, we can get it online, right?

Not according to Equifax....

After being charged (TWICE!) for a free report, they wrote back, saying:

The Equifax Credit Report when ordered over the internet is not offered

for

free under any circumstances. The internet service provided is what

the

consumer is charged for... not the report itself.

They refunded ONE of the charges.

I was able to get free reports online from the other two agencies.....

My story (the letter I wrote to them) is posted next.....

My story, in the form of my letter to EQ:

On January 27, 2003, I was denied an auto loan by

Household Finance. The body of the letter reads, in

part:

Thank you for applying with Household. At this time,

we are unable to

approve your application.

Our credit decision was based in whole or in part on

information we

obtained in a report from Equifax, a consumer

reporting agency, P.O. Box

740241, Atlanta, GA 30374, (800) 685-1111.

(the full message is also being sent, as an

attachment).

I tried to order a free copy of my credit report,

which I am entitled to under the Fair Credit Recording

Act. I called the 800 number above and entered my

information into the automated recording system.

I was told my request could not be processed with the

information given.

Thinking I must have made a mistake, I tried again.

Same result.

I tried a third time. Ditto.

Frustrated, I logged on to Equifax.com to try to

access my report online. Unlike other, more

customer-friendly Credit Reporting Agencies, there was

no quick link to a free report for those who had been

denied credit in the past 60 days.

I selected the paid report, certain that, at some

point, I would be asked if I had been denied credit in

the past 60 days. When it became certain that I would

not be asked, I clicked the back button on my browser

to go back to the index page.

I thought perhaps the FICO score selection would ask

if I'd been denied credit in 60 days. It did not.

Later, to my horror, I found that I was charged for

both a credit report AND a credit report with FICO

score WHEN I WAS LEGALLY ENTITLED TO RECEIVE A FREE

CREDIT REPORT!!

I am quite angry. It is taking a great deal of

strength on my part to remain cordial.

What I would like is for my credit card to be refunded

for the transactions (Credit Report, and Credit Report

with FICO score) that took place last night, 2/9/03.

Transaction# and

Transaction#

I trust that Equifax has no interest in violating the

Fair Credit Reporting Act, and that my experience is

just the result of poor design and gross incompetence.

(So....incompetence equals increased revenue! GOD BLESS US!!)

Hey you two!

Glad you like the discussion! Your other posts have helped me a great deal.

Just a thought, in regards to:

The Equifax Credit Report when ordered over the internet is not offered

for

free under any circumstances. The internet service provided is what

the

consumer is charged for... not the report itself.

When we get our report through the mail, does that mean we're paying nine bucks for the FREAKIN' STAMP??

LOL- well you must not forget the mad brain-power behind the entire process. From recieving your request, to preparing the report, to folding it, licking the envelope AND the stamp and proceed to the mailbox, this takes time and time is money.....

yeah.. right.. they don't fold, lick or apply stamps to anything. Its ALL done by machine and the 'stamp' is a postal meter. Going to the mailbox probably consists of the thing being spit into a huge mail bin and the post office picks up all that stuff at their facility !!

There's barely any human effort here at all !!

Since we're on the subject of oxymorons....

I just received a "Customer Satisfaction Survey" from EQ. Of course they got a bunch of "1"s (lowest). At the end I congratulated them on their ability to violate the FCRA through poor design and incompetence. It really IS clever!

Anyhoo, I click submit....and I get a screen saying MY REPORT CANNOT BE PROCESSED!!

I wonder if my report had been able to processed had I given them all 10's.....
