For those of you using Privacy Guard, please be sure to monitor your billing for which ever credit card you gave them. I signed up for their service on April 5th 2003 and on May 5th 2003 my cc was charged by a company called CIC Credit Monitoring Service for $79.95 - this is actually consumerinfo.com. I did not sign up for service through them but I do know that when I pull my report through pg is shows up as a pull from consumerinfo.com. I called to have the charge reversed and the, not so friendly, csr said that I must have signed up for their service and didn't cancel it. I said WRONG, that is exactly when I signed up for pg & of course she said they have nothing to do with pg. I said well, that's funny because everytime I pull my pg report it shows as a soft inquiry on my report from consumerinfo.com. All she would say at that point is mam, I have cancelled the account and you should receive a credit in 7-10 days. Scary thing is they have all of my info & I am not happy at all. She verified all of my personal info ssn#, address, dob and mothers maiden name.

Please just be sure to check your billing statements asap to make sure they didn't charge you also. I read on another board that this has happened to at least 1 other person so far. I submitted a dispute online with the cc company and I don't plan on cancelling the dispute until I am sure that the credit has gone through.

ps - Privacy Guard's site is down. It just says, be back so they are obviously having a lot of trouble. Last night when I tried to look at mine & DH's reports they were mixed up. On his login I could see my report from 5/6/03 and on my login I could only see his report from 4/28. Hope they get it fixed right this is crazy.

The DW and I went to the site yesterday afternoon to setup and account and didn't receive the information needed to login so that we could get a report. The only thing that we got was that we would receive the login info via snail mail. Is this normal?

No, I received my privacyguard info online instantly. I believe if they have trouble verifying your identity then that may be why they said that. I know that they have been having trouble for about 4 or 5 days so that may have something to do with it.

This might be true, we tried on another site and was told that we need to send then three pieces of info to prove that we are who we say we are. I'm hoping that this doesn't run up the red flags on us. It's not that we have good credit or anything like that. But there are some CA that we avoid.

I also saw an inquiry from CIC and contacted PG. PG told me they are affiliated with CIC, PG contracts with CIC to pull reports and do the credit monitoring. I asked who would be billing me and was told that it would be PG. They were wrong to bill you and I would contact PG about this.

I did the same thing yesterday.. 'cept I had to do it by phone, cause the online thing wasn't working. They gave me a temporary account number and said everything else would be sent by mail in 5-7 days, if I recall. HOWEVER, they said the information hits the system within 24-48 hours and that I could call back to set up my online account and start getting access. Gonna do that sometime today after I get motivated enough to walk the 10 feet to my cell phone :p

Privacyguard is one of many many companies owned and operated by a very large corporation named Trilegiant. They are the same company that you get offers from in your cc statements for travel services. One of the biggies is the dreaded "Travelers Advantage" This corp. also own many hotels, motels and resorts. They also are into magazine subscriptions. We have all gotten those calls on the phone or been offered the "free" magazine subscription that ends up costing an arm and a leg :( Watch your cc statements carefully, they are pretty slick when it comes to billing and it sometimes can be difficult to cancel any service with them. When you call to cancel they will try to turn you over to an "account specialist" and if you are not careful by the time they are done with you .. you will have signed up for another year and two other services  They really are that good on the phone and they get paid a bonus for every cancelation they prevent. I know.. I used to work for them

:(

WOW, thanks for the heads up C Whitney. I do plan to watch very carefully. Fortunately, I check my cc statements online regularly. We have had problems before and had to cancel a cc because someone online got ahold of the number and was using it for access to pornographic sites. Now, I check them online every couple of days so when I see something that isn't right I can take care of it right away.
