Questions about Credit Repair 101

Two questions here to better edumacate myself.... :)

1.

First you should opt-out of pre-approved offers of credit with the credit agencies. You call this number and give them your info inc ss# and they send you a letter asking you to sign and send back. Don't worry, its legit and works like a charm to keep CA's from adding things back to your report down the road. This is especially important if you plan on getting a home loan some day. You can remove your name from prescreened credit or insurance offer mailing lists from Experian, Innovis, TransUnion and Equifax by calling 888 5OPT OUT (888 567 8688). If you are in a hurry, chose the 2 year option and they don't have to send you the letter to sign, they can just put it on there.

My question is how does removing your name from this list work like a charm to prevent things from being re-added to your reports?

And is there a particular advantage to actually sending back the form over just doing the 2 year deal?

2.

Once this is done, after about 30 days, you should start with getting your personal information correct on each credit report. Make sure your name, address and employment, dl, ss, dob, anything personal is reported correctly. Dispute old or outdated info as not yours with each of the cras. By doing this, it gives you an extra shot at getting old things off your reports.

When disputing these, I understand removing very old outdated things, incorrect variations of your name but how about old legitimate stuff...

For example:

a last address that is very recent (less than 2 years old).

If you are a lady using your spouses name would it be advisable to have your maiden name removed?

Having your spouses name removed from the credit file even if it is your current spouse?

I can only answer two of the questions. Someone else will need to answer the others. (You can only do what you feel comfortable with, but this is how I feel about it):

As far as the recent address and maiden name...If there are bad accts attached to them, then the answer is "Yes and Yes!" Get them removed!

It is very easy, as long as they are not the current ones. Just call up and say they are wrong, period, no explanation. "Did you live there?" No. Its none of their business, in my opinion!

When you get something deleted and it was a bad account, it most times will be sold to a new ca. Even accounts that you might file bk on can and are sold to other ca's. Accounts you might have paid are sold to ca's, accounts that are past SOL are sold to cas. Accounts that don't belong to you get added. Even though you get them deleted, these ca's are looking to make some money on them still. What the opt out does is prevent these scummy guys from looking through your credit report for the fun of it to see what your doing and what they can stir up with you. If you don't have the opt out, any ca at all can look at your report, they then see your looking to buy a house and add the old outdated account to your report. You go to close, lender pulls new report and sees new bad account. Lender says pay or no loan. This has happened to many people, at that point, your just going to pay it because you don't want to lose your home.

You want any address off your reports that are connected with bad accounts, same with the names. It is very easy to get these deleted, just call and say never lived there. Or write a letter saying so. If your married now and have accounts that went bad in this name, you would want to try and remove that name. It might not work good doing that if you are married and using his name. You will have to send a copy of DL to prove your name. I would get the spouse and his ss# removed if he has bad credit too. If you both have each others info on your reports, its easy for a ca or creditor to add his bad to yours or your bad to his.
