:?

I received a letter a few weeks ago from a law firm claiming to represent Credigy Receivables, Inc. and I have attempted to confirm the validity of the law firm's actual existence but have managed to come up empty.

The name of the law firm is:

Stewart & Associates, P.C.

Attorneys At Law

Post Office Box 60054

New Orleans, LA 70160-0054

1-(866)-204-3457

Has anyone out there ever heard of this law firm? I attempted to locate information about them on the internet; no luck; tried nationwide 411; no luck there as well; tried to determine if they were licensed to practice law in LA as well as GA; GA because the phone number listed above is in Norcross, GA. Anyone out there ever heard of this firm?

Dear Lady N Red:

You're so smart; it's amazing. Can you tell me why I would receive a letter from a law firm with a New Orleans, LA return mailing address; their contact phone number is an (866) phone number; you dial the number; only to be told on the other end they never heard of the law firm in question?

As I said before; it's seems shady to me; if they are a legitimate law firm; why didn't they go ahead and list their address as you have it listed in your post; assuming they are one and the same but I have no intentions of contacting them to find out.

I mailed a C & D letter to the New Orleans, LA mailing address; I mailed my letter by certified mail by RRR, we'll just have to wait and see if someone shows up to claim my letter and sign for it. If they do; should I do anything else or wait to see if I am contacted by the law firm again? I shouldn't be contacted by them again; should I?

If they are bold enough to do so; what's my next move? By the way can the law firm in question be licensed in one state and be set up to receive mail in another state? Explain why they would bother doing so. Could it be the reason for the N.O., LA mailing address is because I'm located here in Biloxi, Mississippi?

Dear Lady N Red:

Just a follow up to my previous post to you; should I send an email to the address you furnished in your post on Stewart & Associates, P.C. in Norcross, Georgia in an attempt to determine if they are one and the same law firm as was also listed in my recent letter?

To try and determine if they are also the same law firm as is listed with a post office box return mailing address in New Orleans, LA? Should I do that? Should I also inform them that a certified letter is on it's way to the N.O., LA return mailing address from me concerning my past due CC matter?

Where did you go or how did you obtain all of that information on them and how were you also able to determine that the law firm in question "IS NOT" licensed to practice law in the state of LA?

Finally I have received posts from another law forum stating that I should contact the LA Bar Association myself and inform them of this matter; to ask them about Stewart & Associates, P.C. and to inform them of what they are doing; should I do that as well? Another post suggested that I check to see if they are also licensed in LA or GA to perform collections. Would such required another type of license issued in a specific state; a license to do collection work?

Lets see if I can answer your questions.

I found the info on the law firm in GA at www.collector.com , a site run by the American Collector's Assn. They have rosters of all CA and CA lawfirm members.

As for the LA Bar Assn, I went to their site www.lsba.org, and did a search on "Stewart" - many Stewarts, not a single Steven J - therefore he's NOT a member of the LA Bar and not licensed to practice law in that state.

Many states require licensing and/or bonds for collection agencies to operate in your state. That IS in addition to any other licensing requirements.

It appears MS is rather lax:

COLLECTION AGENCY BOND & LICENSE

Bond: No

License: City-Business

Fee: $15-$50

I would NOT email that lawfirm, wait and see what comes of your letter first. The LAST thing you want to do is inform a CA that you're sending a certified letter.

It is entirely possible that Credigy uses that lawfirm, and use the NO, LA address as a registered agent for CREDIGY. Have to do some investigating at the state and corporate level to dig that out.

I would definitely contact the LA Bar Assn, see what they have to say about this whole thing.

Lady N' Red:

Thanks for the reply. You happen to have an email address in your database for the LA Bar Association? I went to their website; sent an email to the only address listed; an address to submit suggestions as well as feedback; my email was returned to me as being undeliverable. I guess I'll have to give them a call.
