cell phone credit checks

Where do you live? Because I live in the southeast US and Bellsouth is the phone company that you pretty much have to go through for home service. I was offered a cingular wireless account through bellsouth a couple of months ago with a 600 fico and lots (4) of chargeoffs. I believe they own cingular. They did run a credit check. Maybe this will help you out.

When I signed up for SprintPCS, my credit was pretty bad but they didn't require anything. They did sign me up for some program they had for people with less than stellar credit but the only difference was that I only had like $200 limit and I had to pay my bill on time each month... no biggie!! Plus, Sprint has the option for $5 extra a month whereby you can call any other Sprint cellular customer and it doesn't count towards your minutes. I think I use about 1800 minutes a month and it only costs about $35 plus taxes.

My husband has a score in the 720's, but he was asked for a deposit because he only has a few tradelines (Verizon)

Nextel was the same with me. They said according to their scoring system, I was a "D" (with a 727 FICO). Sounds more like a scam to get money from the consumer up front.

T*mobile pulled TU (currently 637) and said that I only qualified for 1 line + $75 dep. I said thanks but no thanks! I had cingular at one point.... I was approved for multiple lines/no deposit and a 650 EQ (that is who they pulled). They pissed me off so I dropped them.

Who did ATT pull?

T-Mobile and its predecessor Voice Stream approved me for a cell phone with no deposit even when my credit sucked big green donkey [EXPLETIVE DELETED].

However, there was definitely a limitation because they denied me extra phones when I wanted to get extra ones for both my parents for a Christmas present.

What bothers me is that cell phone companies are amongst many industries that get a stiffy on checking your credit even though they have limited risk. Like, a cell phone company can pull the plug on your service if you don’t pay your bill and even put a limit on many minutes you use.

It is just another way to give you the chorizo.

What I find ironic is that cell phone companies make such a big deal on checking your credit but they refuse to report your good credit to the CRAs, even though they have millions of customers and reporting would be a snap for them.
