Jobseeker15
Hello All!To anyone who can give me friendly advise.I recently applied to work for a national fortune 500 company. After five nerve wrecking interviews and 45 days since I singned a credit disclosure form along with the employment application, as I thought was the last step.I waited anxiously for the phone call from HR to make me an offer. Instead to my dismay I was told by HR that I failed a backround check from (GIS) General Inforamtion Services, Inc. The director of HR mentioned that I would receive a package from GIS. Due to my CREDIT HISTORY I have been denied an excellent position at a great Co. My credit history has no jugdements or bankruptcies. The accounts highlighted are 3 open CC that went to collections. All adding up to $8,000.I have the money to pay, but can I solve this issue and still be considered?
admin
I think it's probably too late for this position as things will take time but there is hope for next one. Follow our credit repair techniques and you should be well on your way.
breathing_easier
jobseeker: I'm sorry this happened to you and I can only imagine how frustrated you feel. For what it's worth, I think it is absolute insanity that companies look at past credit history when selecting employees. Unless you've been convicted of embezzlement from a previous employer or some such thing, I really don't see how one impacts the other. Same for deciding on insurance premium rates by pulling a credit report. It is so Big Brotherish that it gives me the creeps. You could try calling the HR person you were dealing with and asking if you showed proof of paying off the accounts if it would make a difference. If they decline, then just look at it as a sign that this job wasn't the one for you. I know it's hard to look at it that way right now when you're feeling so crummy, but I'll bet you find something even more stellar down the road.Read everything you can on these boards and educate yourself before paying off those debts. You'll be way ahead of so many on these boards, including me, who paid off and settled debts (I did mine through a third party...BIG mistake!) before we knew what we were doing. In the event you haven't yet read it on the boards, if you do pay off your cc debt, make certain to only pay if they agree to mark the tradeline as "Pays as Agreed," with no mention of the collection. If they won't agree to that then, at the very least, demand deletion of the tradeline. Take care ... this too shall pass.
cabledude
We pull CR's for our employment screening process and really only look at it for management positions that may require money matters. Most of the time we just use it for address verification. Anyhow I think that it is actually a bad move to TELL the employee they have bad credit and they were denied employment because of it. You may have a legal recouse if you can get them to put that info in writing. I hate the fact that we have the ability of denying someone employment based on a CR. However, it is a true reality. Hell they would not have hired me a few years ago if they looked at mine. It's fixed for the most part now (thanks to this board) except for a few old lates. I just think they are a bit foolish actually TELLING you as it just spells L.E.G.A.L A.C.T.I.O.N.

DocDon
Also have to keep in mind that this is an "added" tool a potential employer can use to not hire you because they didn't want you in the first place but need a viable reason.A couple collection accounts is a pretty weak excuse not to hire somebody. So what do they do with current employees whose credit takes a dive shortly after they're hired in? creditmess
I was also denied excellent position (probably would change my life forever) at a great FINANCIAL company. They really liked me and did the whole credit checking deal. Came back and said they can't hire me because of my credit I was heart broken. But you have to move on. I know it's hard. Rezin
any place that may give you a Corporate card, or trust you with finacial matters, like petty cash, or a company vehicle WILL rely on your credit to see how you would handle it. Sux, but I see their point.........
breathing_easier
Rezin: I still don't see how poor credit would affect the handling of petty cash or a company vehicle. So, they're saying that if you have poor credit you must be a crook? Preposterous.

Sux, but I see their point.........Thats not neccessary true. I got a job with a consulting company and my credit was at its worst. They still hired me, and I had their Corporate Amex card....I guess it all depends on the company.
Catching Nemo
The same thing happened to me trying to get an entry level position with a financial services company. I was heartbroken, especially since my financial problems began because Schwab laid me off. I could not believe that they wouldn't hire me! The HR representative told me that 17 prior potential employees for that position were turned down for poor credit history also!At any rate, once I received the package from the background company I found this board and started working on my reports. It's a slow process, but I'm slowly gaining ground. I am not going to apply anywhere else until I have a pretty clean report. I'm in the same boat, good luck to you. jcro
Big business see people as a name and number. They probably missed out on a great employee.Hold your head up and keep looking. Not every company will do that based on bad credit.
