question when applying for mortgage loan

You can't, the ss# would not match your name, address, employment, etc. etc, and it's a class "C" felony. Your best bet is to not call those people in the first place. Get yourself a good mortgage broker with a good reputation, and discuss with him your future goals. :D

I think that you want to "shop around for rates & programs" but are wanting to also be careful.

My suggestion is to have a mortgage person run your credit, and offer to pay them for the report., and send it to you. Then as you are talking to loan officers, tell them the scores, and if they want more info, fax them a copy of your report with your SSN on each page "blacked out". Once you have a quote that you like, get a Good Faith Estimate and go from there.

When you find the program that you like, then spend some time with the loan officer to make sure that they deal a lot with your type consumer. It is hard to be an expert in every niche of the mortgage lending business, and you want some one that works mostly with programs that will work best for you.
