Authorized user....What kind of impact can I expect?

Oh so grateful to my dear mother, she just added me yesterday to her Discover Card as an authorized user so I could get my score up. Her Credit line is $8000 and she has at the moment $1900 balance. Her scores range from high 700's to something like 825 (I must be missing that gene 8-) )

She was told they would start reporting it after the billing date which is the 6th of every month, so got to wait for next months reporting cycle. Just wondering what kind of jump to expect. I'm so anxious, can hardly wait. :-)=

I hate to tell you this, but technically, an authorized user shouldn't get ANY credit on their credit report for this...only people who have credit liability. The best thing to do is to maybe convince to open another credit card and have you as a JOINT user.

That all being said, it's possible that you will still get some credit from it, as CRAs mistaken factor in AU accounts.

 Keeping my fingers crossed. She told me that she asked them to make sure and they said that yes, it would be reported to all 3 credit bureaus. She actually had called 2 of her cards to add me to but only added me to one as the other card was asking her for all kind of personal information (bank acct# and stuff) and she just told them she had no time for that.

She did ask them to go ahead and send an application to add me as joint user but I'm not sure they'll approve me as my scores are so low.

I'll keep you posted once next month comes around.

just as an aside, my ENTIRE CR and credit history, comes from being an AU. i have no credit of my own.

I have no doubt that this happens. But, I'd try and fix that...apply for some secured cards, etc. You need credit in your own name.

Plus, if any of that credit is bad credit, you can get those accounts off by saying that you are an authorized user. Just a tip. :)

I also have a same situation where I was listed as anthorized user of my big brother's credit card. In year 2000, He went banana and charged it all up and wouldn't be able to pay it back and let it go to charge off.

Now my credit report is stucked with a negative account as charge off; no collection in file though. This negative really affect my fico score and I am having trouble trying to get a decent credit card due to that charge off.

Is there anyway I can dispute it and remove it or I have to wait it off for another 3 more yrs., since its last activity date was yrs 2000.?

If there's way please tell me how....

have you tried disputing with the CRAs that you were only an AU on the account, and it should not be on your CR?

Not yet, I don't know if I can legally do that...will they remove it for that reason "Authorized User"?. I just don't want to file a dispute without knowing I have a chance of removing. I am very new to this " Credit report thing" until I found this forum.

Have anybody in this forum successfully done it? And how to start a dispute process? Please help...

yes you can dispute it for that, technically/legally they are not supposed to report AUs to the CRAs, as only information on credit of the person who is responsible for the repayment is supposed to be reported.

you should be able to do a search and get heaps of info about how to dispute, but basically you just send the CRAs a letter, with enough information for them to be able to identify you as being you, and specify what is inaccurate (account number, bank name, you were only a AU, so it is not your account) and that you would like that information removed.

Thanks for all the helpful info; I will proceed the dispute process. Should I submit the dispute to all three CRA at the same time or one by one?

By the way, will filing a dispute have any effect on my credit score?

I recently accepted a pre-approval BofA Platinum visa with $2000 CL, I thought Platinum Visa is supposed to be $5000 min. But they only gave me $2k CL after they pulled my Experian credit score. thanks to my brother for messing up my credit; otherwise I would have a better CL... just wonder how often this guy automatically increase your credit limit?

I also applied a Citi Platinum online last week, they didn't give me any result yet, probably they will send me letter. Citi pulled my TU credit report, my TU score was the highest one "716". Do you think they will give any credit with that score.?

Last year my cousin had absolutely no credit (not even a score, the reports were clean as driven snow) and wanted some help, so my aunt put her on 2 of her cards as an AU. The first went on almost immediately, but the second took forever and my cousin didn't want to wait. The card was 7 years old with a $6000 credit line, perfect payments and around a $150 balance. The one line alone gave her 700s across the board. She went out and got a BoA with $6000, a Fleet with $4000 and more than $7500 in plastic surgery financing. So yes, being an AU does work.

P.S. At the age of 17, my credit got started by my mother putting me on as AU to her cards and then she acquired a $7500 line of credit in my name(without my knowledge on any of it) and this was back in 1991. So it even worked then...
