Credit union

I recently joined a credit union so my account balance is low right now. One thing they have started doing is charging $5 dollars a month if you dont maintain a certain balance in your account. If you have a loan with them then they waive the fee also. Should i drop them and look for another or is 5 dollars reasonable?

It's very rare for a small credit union to do such a thing since they are so membership driven (want to keep their members very happy). I was with a CU for more than 10 years, then they started their "fees rampage" after they opened their 8th branch. Closed my account and went with another CU.

I'll probably look for another one but they charge a 15 dollar fee if you close an account that is not at least 90 days old, so i guess i might as well write some checks and get my moneys worth for a while.

The thing that really did it for me was that nobody told me that they had decided to start doing that and i almost bounced a check. If i hadnt looked online one day and noticed i was 5 dollars short i would have definitely bounced my first check.

If they imposed that fee, chances are there are other fees as well. Check it out.

You have to decide the risk / reward of keeping the account. You've looking at $15 and about $9 for the checks. You also mentioned you bounced a check, meaning your balance isn't always going to be up where they want it. $25 bounced check fee, $5 below min balanace fee = $30 - more than what it would cost you to close the account.

Yeah, I also got a similar message from Lockheed Credit Union. I'll be closing out that account (only have a savings with them).

DHK, you are with Lockheed???

I got a funny story about that credit union.

Back in my college days, a buddy of mine was really upset that the university still did not get his paperwork about his student loans. It was causing serious problems in getting him enrolled for that semester.

He finally stormed the financial aid office and wanted to know why the proceeds from his student loan from Lockheed had not gotten in yet. The finanical aid office did some investigating and then they discovered the mistake.

The boneheads there saw the name "Lockheed" and changed it to "Lackland" Federal Credit Union and changed the address and all the other information.

My friend was NEVER a member of Lackland, thus there was no way for Lackland to ever process that.

My friend was from Houston (his father was an engineer for Lockheed) but there isn't a branch here in San Antonio. However, Lackland Air Force base is really huge here (that is where all AF recruits start off at) and so is Lackland Federal Credit Union.

Now that took some major intelligence deficiencies to pull that one off...
