Federal Tax Lien satisfied by bankruptcy

Recommended Posts

In the early 90's, I found myself with a larger tax liability that I could ever pay. I filed a Chap 7 (in 1994) to discharge those taxes that were "stale" followed by a Chap 13 (in 1995) to repay the remaining priority tax liability. I completed the Chap 13 plan in early 2000. The IRS had filed several tax liens that were satsified by the bankruptcy process, however for some reason they only released 2 of the 3 liens, until I called a few days ago, when IRS gave me the good news that they had released the last remaining lien. Problem is, the release date is September 2004, and the CRA's report these liens for 7 years from the date they are satisfied or released. I've tried talking to IRS, but they are not the brightest bunch down there, and I've gotton nowhere. They tell me there is nothing they can do to change the release date (even though they admit they were wrong) and will not write a letter explaining the situation. Any ideas?

Like every bunch of people, some are sharper than others. I've had some success calling back every few days and talking with a different person until I eventually reach one that actually know how to do their job.

Call again, talk to someone else.

There's also a Tax Ombudsman (sp?) service that you might try. They seem to know a little more about the actual regs....
