terri888
When my husband left the air force in 1994 he apparently left behind an unpaid AAFES Deferred Payment Plan account. His ex apparently ran it up (she was also air force) after they split. But as he had added her to the account as an authorized user he got stuck with it - he forgot to cancel her card. Anyway long story, but OSI hasselled us unmericfully about it, got them no where cause you can't get blood out of a stone. The last two year AAFES has intercepted our tax returns and applied them to the debt.THe original debt in 1997 was $1906.36, now after taking three payments totalling $2034, they claim we still owe them $1912.68 as they are adding $21pr month = $250 pr year in penalties to the account. I (the new wfie - make that the LAST wife!!) had challenged it and it dropped off the CR - thank goodness, but they are still taking our tax returns. Can I do anything to get out from under this, we really don't want to settle with them as we don't feel the darn debt is ours anyway. All advice gratefully received.
Methuss
Unfortunately government liens are hard to get rid of. Your best bet is to reach a settlement with the OSI and then sue the hell out of his ex-wife to recoup the loss. If she used the AAEFS account after they seperated, then she can be held accountable for using an account she knew or had sufficient reason to believe woudl result in the defrauding of her ex-husband. terri888
I feel for you - they are the hardest people to deal with! I don't think I did anything brilliant, it was just old and I had disputed it so many times it is hard to remember. I do remember that OSI got particularly nasty right before it dropped off the radar screen, so maybe it was just time. I have been working on this CR for two years now, there is so much paperwork! Ihave learned you must keep everything - even if it drops off your report. If it should ever get relisted, you can use that to get it taken off again. I did find that when I called AAFES direct at the base in Dallas (214) 312 6014 and asked to be transferred to AAFES I actually got a person on the phone instead of waiting forever for nothing on that 1800 #. They were helpful, and I dealt direct with them. OSI are nasty people.Good luck,
