Grinder
I'm just begining to try to negotiate settlements on a few credit card balances. My first call was to Discover. The rep I spoke with told me that they "don't do settlements". They also told me that my wife would have to call- as she is the primary on the account- to attempt to negotiate any waiving of fees, etc.Is this really the case, or are these common stonewalling tactics? Thanks!Grinder
willingtocope
Of course Discover will do settlements. Just not until they've tried everything they can to intimidate you into paying everything they can get. You might try writing to their executive offices, offering what you think you can afford, and asking for signed copy of your letter if they agree. Be very careful to state stuff like "this will settle the account in full, you'll remove TL from my credit report, and you'll go away for ever". You'll find lots of examples of settlement letters in other posts.And...yeah, if the card is in your wife's name, they probably would rather talk with her on the phone, although you can negotiate on her behalf. If you do it in writing, you don't have that problem...
Grinder
Thanks for the input. What is the recommended method of locating the address information for credit card companies' corporate offices?Grinder

SCinPA
Let me tell you about Discover Card. They are T-O-U-G-H- TOUGH!They were the LAST people to give me a credit card when every major CC gave me one years before. I couldnt even get one for years! If I made an expensive purchase, they'd call and make sure it was me using the card (I know that's a security measure, but it shows how tough they are). Years later, when I got behind , they called constantly, at home and work. They WILL settle, but not til they intimidate you first. They used a collection agency called Focus Receivables that actually had me PAGED at work to talk to them! They said they would attach my wages if I didn't pay them. I later found out that they CAN'T attach wages in PA, where I live, so they LIED to me!!They recently sued me and a judgement was made that I owe over $4,000 to them. I am terrified they will take my bank account, so very little amt of money is kept in the acct right now.Whenever I see a Discover ad on tv I feel like throwing something at the TV!!GOOD LUCK with them!!! workinninetofive
Discover card was the first card that I ever got. I was 18, made very little money & they gave me one. I paid it on time, paid it off and closed it. Unfortunately, it dropped off somehow. I only have 2 that I am trying to do the PFD thing with. I found both to be super tough. One just wrote me back.. refuses to write anything but "paid settlement". So, I'm writing them back with NO.. I'm not paying it for the hell of it. I think you just have to keep at it. chemist68
I have just received a letter from these crooks (All CA's are crooks). How long after the letter did they sue? Discover is my last card and you are right they are TOUGH. I would settle at this point to avoid a judgement, but was curious if anyone has had any luck with these guys.
