robin444
Hi there,I could use some advice because I think I just screwed up. I'm rebuilding my credit. I just applied for the USA Gold Credit card, but it doesn't have a Visa or MC logo. Are there limitations on what vendors will accept this card? Would I be better off canceling the USA Card and applying for another one with a Visa or MC logo? Thanks for your imput!-Robin
DocPC
It's like a store card. You can only use it for their over-priced merchandise.
robin444
I can't see why this card would be recommended by this board if it's use is so limited. This is VERY misleading. I will cancel this card as soon as I get it. Can I assume that other cards recommended by this board with the Visa or MC logo can be used like any other Visa or MC card? I'm sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I don't want to make another mistake.Regretfully,Robin
DHK
Keep in mind that part of the board's areas of profit is to sell advertising space. As long as they offer a product, I'm sure that the board will offer advertising space. Ads don't necessarily mean that we recommend their services.I'd stay away from USA Platinum (catalog) cards. No reason to even have them. I don't think they report your activities to the 3 CB anyways.Study all credit card offers and ask questions on this board to see how well it may suit you or not.Unless you have horrible credit, I know I'd stay away from First Premier bank and Centennial bank Visa/MC. After they're done adding in all their fees, you've got $19 available credit when you receive the card. I'd rather get a standard secured card instead of their program. robin444
But the USA Gold Card WAS recommended by this board. If you go to the info on Secured Credit Cards you'll find a link at the bottom of the page that says the following:So what cards are good? Here is a list of the cards we recommend:http://www.creditinfocenter.com/cards/selectACard.shtmlHow can that NOT be a recommendation?!
DocPC
Look, if you are upset about the advertising I suggest you take it up with Kristy (admin). She has to pay the bills somehow unless of course you care to donate? Seriously, this has come up before and unless you want the board to shut down or can help pay for it that's just the way it is. DocDon
Robin, why would you ever apply for something without reading the terms and conditions first? It clearly states it's not a logo'd Visa / Mastercard and is used for purchases out of their catalog.NEVER sign anything until you fully understand what it is you're getting yourself into - otherwise you'll never have credit. You'll just keep screwing yourself over.Just because one card is recommended doesn't mean it's right for you. Take some responsibility with your credit and stop being so naive. Read. Understand. Protect yourself. Too add: I don't like those membership club cards, so I don't recommend them - doesn't mean they don't have a place in someone else's rebuilding scenario. Guest jeeptravel
My wife loves her Fingerhut. Usually pays it off in a couple months. The USA platinum is kinda scary. Don't look at this site as a parent that protects you. Weigh everything you apply for with a sardonic and careful eye!jt
robin444
I appreciate everyone's feeback, but I still think my point is valid. Not everyone who comes to this site is as saavy as you are, especially the newcomers. I understand this website sustains itself with income from its advertisers. That is not what I'm objecting to. But the "recommendation" implies an endorsement of these products and that's what I find misleading. If Credit Info Center isn't endorsing these products, then why recommend them? This can be easily remedied by removing the word "recommendation" from the webpage. That is all I am saying. Frankly, I can't imagine who would recommend the USA Gold if it's use is so limited. As for me, I'll certainly research my options more carefully before applying for another card. Once again, I appreciate your feedback.
DocDon
Robin, it has nothing to do with being savvy, nor does it have to do with being a newcomer. You simply do not sign anything until you understand it fully. Period. The issue here isn't the way a possible solution is presented, it's you not taking the time to read what you're signing. For that, you cannot blame anyone else.Take recommendations for what they're worth. Sometimes they'll fit into your plans, sometimes they won't. There may be situations out there where such a card may be the only option to rebuild. People recommend Amex. Some people don't like Amex - they like Household. They recommend Household, somebody recommends Citi.
c m chase
Frankly, I can't imagine who would recommend the USA Gold if it's use is so limited. As for me, I'll certainly research my options more carefully before applying for another card. Once again, I appreciate your feedback. That's a good plan...research before you jump into anything. Doc has a valid and very important point. Reading before you sign is always a good thing, no matter who recommends what. For instance, I will recommend First Preimer card to people starting out...others will chime in that it's a rip off because of their fees and such. It helped me starting out, so I still stand by my FP. Sorry to point out the obvious, but you could have seen by the picture on the website that it wasn't a Visa or Mastercard....not to mention the card's terms of agreement - the first line says 'this is not a visa or mastercard'. It was recommended because it apparently reports to a credit bureau, which would help your score. We were all newcomers at some point in the game. Just make sure you know what you're doing when dealing with credit of any type. That's why we're all here in the first place.

Guest jeeptravel
Heck, if you're stuck with it. Why not buy some xmas gifts on it and pay em right off. Might help your score. Like I said, my wife is crazy about her fingerhut. We got my son a little guitar on which i plan to teach him. He's 6 and all the local places had nothing small and quality for less than $100. Fingerhut had an awesome Harmony for $70. It came with a gig bag and a tuning pitch pipe. As long as we pay it off before next month, we pay very minimal charges in interest and it posts to her CR as a positive!Look for the silver lining: and just be sure and pay it back. It's not a contract is it? You can choose to close it if you want right? Good luck, I understand your feelings on this as you have related them.Happy HolidaysDamien
