Jeep 2005
Should I do it? I won't even be using the account, but I wanted something with a high limit, perfect record, no balance, and a 10 year histroy.I currenty have the following:- $1400 limit secured- $1000 unsecured- $3000 platinum card (wife is the primary)Anything to be concerned about here? If it helps, my income is around $75K.
morrow
If your parents are willing to put you on as an AU...and they have a perfect track record with thier Discover...then I dont see any reason why you SHOULDNT do it! Wish my parents would do that for me...
Jeep 2005
My only worries is that the open credit line (exposure?) would drop the score, but I would think that my income would avoid that. Also - I have the option to go on any one of their cards ranging up to a $40K limit. Should I go that high or just keep it to $10K?Thanks for the help!
wunderwoman
Definitely don't do the 40k, because your income doesn't support a trade line that high. Do the 10k, but if I were you I would ask them to pull their credit report FIRST to be sure that it's being reported, if it's updated monthly, and who it's being reported to.Then, I'd use the PG score simulator to see if it will increase or decrease my score significantly. They can pull their reports using the PG trial, and cancel before it expires. You must be an EDUCATED consumer, and you want to cover all your bases.

morrow
I used to hop in bed with my parents a lot when I was a kid. Nightmares and such. One day, just stopped needin' to, it was wierd.jtWhats that supposed to mean? Are you implying that he needs to grow up and quit using Mommy and Daddy? Cause if thats the case.....that was a sucky comment to make and I dont find it funny at all.
wunderwoman
Morrow, you beat me to the punch on that one. I read it and I was like .....ok, what's THAT supposed to mean?
Guest jeeptravel
LOL. I think it's a bad move for him to be an AU on mom and dad's account.Guys relate with each other a little more sarcastically ladies. Don't worry, I am sure he can take it.Nonetheless, thanks for your input. My lovely wife sarah and I are having our daughter in 3 weeks, so i guess I better learn to be a little more "tender" in my advice.Hi Morrow! Long time no see.jt
wunderwoman
One of my co-workers and I are always discussing the dynamics between male and female communication. Here again, is another example of Mars & Venus. Yeah....you could never say that to a lady and get away with it )

morrow
I think it's a bad move for him to be an AU on mom and dad's account. Why would it be a bad move? If hes lacking a credit history, I think its a very smart move and in most cases its encouraged around here to try and be added as an AU on an already established account with perfect history, as oppposed to opening up a ton of new accounts which seem to lack the *history* appeal. As for the sense of humor, guys take it different from girls comment....I didnt find your original comment very funny and im sure there are males who happen to agree with me. Jeep2005- I think it would be a smart move to be added to your parents account...be thankful you have such great parents who allow you to do it. But please dont abuse it
workinninetofive
I think that it's wonderful your parents are giving you a 2nd chance. If your family isn't there for ya, who in the world is?
creditobsessed
You might have them check their credit if they're willing. I wouldn't worry about the limit/income thing. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but as an authorized user your not responsible for the bill so, that shouldn't be a factor. I would just make sure to pick the one with the best track record and longest history.Good luck!
miracle
Many members have rebuilt their credit worthiness by being added to "mommy and daddy's" credit account. I see nothing at all wrong with this. I did this for my brother and I just cut up the card that they sent for him and he understands what it is all about. he isn't even allowed to use the account, but he knows it is there to help his credit. I don't think there is anything wrong with that as all.
wert
I think it's a good idea.If a card comes with your name on it, immediately give it to your parents so you won't charge anything on it.It will help your score more than you think, and show future creditors that you have credit. You'll be surprised.
itsgettingbetter
I have a question (for those that became AU's and cut up the cards when they came).Do the cards have to be activated to report? Or will they report even if you don't activate them? I am just wondering if this needs to be done before the cards are destroyed.
Jeep 2005
Jeeptravel - no worries about the abusive comment, part of online forums. Got the PM - Thanks. To clarify, my credit problems are from my college days and I don't have so much as a late payment since 2000.But to the point at hand, I understood that a long established TL with a decent limit and on time payments was a good thing to have. Using my parents tradeline is simply a means to an end - not going to "mommy and daddy" for help. My folks own a company, so they keep a tight eye on their credit profile. Everythings perfect there. They already called it in. When the card arrives I'll activate and cut it up. Not looking for a means to buy toys, just build credit.
