I don't think it would affect your nursing licence much. Now, if you were in a financial field, it may make an effect. State Farm ran my credit when I started working for them.. I hear if you try to become an agent and your CR is not tip top shape, it causes problems.

With nursing I think you have to worry more about your criminal record than your CR.

I work for a big pharmaceutical company. When I was hired less than a year ago, I had a horrible credit score, somewhere in the 400s. I signed a pre-employment agreement for them to check my credit report and check my driving record (I am on site, so I don't know why its relevant anyway). They DID pull my driving record, but there is NO record of them pulling my credit report at any time. Not sure what your employer will do, but that's just my experience.

I am a pharmacist before i went bankrupt my credit was fine back in 97. i had an interview with a security manager as a part of my interview process. he asked me about how much debt I had. I said I did not have much. A couple of days later they pulled me credit report. In 2002 i filed for Chapter 7 becuase of September 11 and stock losses as a result. If this same company pulled my credit report today they would fire me. My only problem now is that i am limited from jumping from job to job becuase of my credit. I do think it is unfair to pull a credit report for pre-employment screening.

The pre-employment screen is to determine the "risk" of a new employee. This is especially true if you are seeking employment in the financial field - where "temptation" is everywhere.

With some professions, there is simply no need, as there is no conceivable way that your position would allow any kind of misappropriation of funds, illegal or unethical behavior, etc... in these cases, yes, it's nothing more than an invasion of privacy.

The company for which I work does credit investigations and background checks every year. Most of the employees undergo annual background checks, however since we wholesale drugs, those of us who have access to narcotics and controlled substances undergo both.

Motive and opportunity, I guess.
