chatter2960
I got a really strage phone call today at work guys! The person asked for me by name, and when I said yes, this is me, he said that he was calling from some agency in response to an application for credit I had made. I wish I had written down the name of the agency he said he was with.I asked him "application for credit with whom?" and he said "it was within the last six months - online or something". When I said that I could not give information over the phone, HE HUNG UP ON ME.I suspect that maybe it was someone from the CA that I am DV. Man, I wish I had gotten their name an number!! Anyone else have this happen to them?
Paladin_Roden
Yeah, my sister has had CA's call her house claiming to be distant relatives. I have even answered the phone at my sisters house and the CA starts asking me questions about my sisters finicial situation. Like "does your sister have a job" "does your sister own or rent" all types of questions that I never answer. I know its them because I recognize their number every time they call. Sometimes they even call pretending to be other businesses. Just live by this rule.NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER give your personal information on the phone to anyone. Not even your mother. Their are tons of people with scanners who can pick up cell phones and cordless phones and just write down your info, and steal your identity. credit_on_mars
It may be a little inconvenient and costly but I opted out, using every opt-out web site or phone number known to man, and have caller-ID and privacy phone whenever that stopped everything in its tracks. Now if I get a call form someone other than an 800-type number, I can see who it is before picking up. If it is an 800-type then I go through this procedure, hit either 1,2,or 3 to answer, sent them packing or some stupid recording about not answering solicitor calls. I’ll bet that one drives them crazy. Also, I never get mail from banks and credit card companies! Great!!!! So, the last CA that called me over a year ago gave up in utter frustration
Valkyrine
Just got a call like that last week. I'm pretty dodgy when I answer the phone, especially 800 numbers, look at my credit scores and you'll see why.I say "hello"... and caller says, "Valkyrine??" I say "sure." Long pause. Then, "congratulations on your new mastercard." I say "no." Another long pause. He asks "no?" and I say I haven't applied for credit in years. He just hung up. But that number has called me 3 - 4 times a day almost every day since.I was wondering if maybe it was a CA (I can think of one in particular) but I thought maybe I was just being paranoid, lol. I'll answer the next one and get a call back number.
credit_on_mars
It may not be anything but after my experiene with ID theft the first thing I would do is to call the CRAs to see if one or more credit card compaines had enquired of me. In other words, find out who this was and dig into it -- with the level of ID thefts these days one must be cautious.
DanceWithSimone
I remember when the so-called IRS called me and asked for my name. And I replied "correct". Then I asked "what is your name & give me the address where you are located along with your phone number also supervisor's name." The lady hung the phone up so fast. I was shocked. But any way I already knew the IRS dont call your house.
devil21
Oh, the IRS *will* call your house if you owe back taxes!!
FishOn
On a somewhat related note I got a call while taking a break from moving furniture into our house after going through a hurricane in the middle of a move. It was from a "sweepstakes" company asking for info. Needless to say I was not pleased and rather pissed untill I saw their # on caller ID which was a Major tactical error on their part, PLUS it was an 800 #. I spent the afternoon calling and berating them and then placing the phone next to the TV speaker while we watched Saving Private Ryan and calling back as soon as they hung up. The next week whenever I was on hold at work I'd surf the web and sign them up for every free vinyl siding consult call web site I could find. They never called me again. ghacorp
Skip tracers do that sort of thing and calls like that are often very effective at getting the information they couldn't have gotten from even Choice Point!
