I have paid a few settlements to creditors I owned. As has my wife. With one in particular, they updated her credit report showing a balance of the difference between the settlement and the full amount owed.

This did not happen with the other ones, they just zero'd it out. Should I dispute?

Do you have any other proof of the agreement? Do not include other CRA's.

If nothing written, do you remember the date, time, name, and main points of the conversation when the agreement was made? If so, then sit down and prepare a letter to the CA that clearly tells the whole of the agreement. Then proceed to inform them as to how unprofessional, etc.

Then inform them that you are filing complaints with your AG, their AG, FTC, and all other governing agencies. You will also inform them of their violation as they are reporting incorrect information. Whoever fed you that BS is a liar. The only way they can report a balance is if there is, in fact, a balance due. If payment was considered as full, they must report as Zero.

OK, let me back up...

I did receive a reciept. Just found it.

It states a balance of $98.40

Below that, there is a box checked indicating "Account is settled"

Now I know when we talked to them, they gave us the impression that our payment would not leave a balance. Otherwise we would have just paid the $98.

We've had to call a lot of people so she can't remember much about the converstation.

Guess I should just pay the $98 and be done with it.

Payinbills! (then payin 'em again appparently.)
