Questions from newbie who's been studying, but needs clarity

Hi Folks,

I’ve been registered here just a few days and appreciate all the experience I read about. Despite having read advice about these topics elsewhere in this website, I still have questions of clarification, and ask for your patience.

a. Two people, one broker and a Customer Service Rep from FreeCreditReport.com, told me to dispute items with the OC before disputing with the CR. “Official” advice by the site sponsor says to dispute to the CR & doesn’t mention ever writing the OC. It seems to me that disputing with the CR would, indeed, save a lot of work and be faster. Which is correct?

b. Does each dispute require a separate letter for each item on a particular CR? e.g.: if a CR shows 15 disputable accts., does that mean I should send 15 letters? And should each be by Registered mail w/ receipt?

c. If I can send several disputes in one letter, what is a rule of thumb as to how many to include before it annoys the checker at the CR? I have 13 disputable accts., one incorrect birthdate and 1 hard inquiry. And I’m in a hurry, ‘natch.

d. Since I have only 2 positive entries on my CRs, (one is Searscard, which I’m told doesn’t help much), but have 13 fairly negative disputable IIB accts (some labelled as COs, but which show long credit histories, e.g. back to 1977, which is a positive), might it not be harmful to my overall Scores if they were deleted along with their long histories?

e. Anyone have any feedback on INNOVIS, a CRA in Ohio?

f. Etiquette-wise, should all these questions be separate posts?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Wow! A tall order. That's OK, we all have lots of ?'s in the beginning.

Dispute with the OC or CA before the CRA. That way, they are led into violating by reporting a disputed without the notice of dispute.

I wouldn't worry about how many disputes in each letter, just break them up in manageable chunks. As far as CMRRR, I don't do it that way, as I feel like I have more luck concentrating on the OC and CA, the only way I worry about the CRA is if I am building a case against them.

Don't get in too much of a hurry, because it won't matter. It will take time. You are looking at 6mos to a year to clear everything up and do it right. Get in a hurry and you will screw it up.

I think the damage done by IIB accounts outweigh the benefit of a long history, but perhaps someone else with experience in BK could better advise you there.

CMRRR = certified mail, return receipt requested.

As for mail vs. online, you'll find a mix of opinions here. I started out online, just to get the ball rolling; from here on out I plan to use mail. Personally, almost everything I send out I send CMRRR. The only exceptions are initial settlement offers; I just do those regular mail (I don't want them to tihnk I'm too savvy right off the bat). If your gut tells you to do it one way, then do it that way.

Good luck!!!

Hi Folks,
:)++ Hi Tony!
I’ve been registered here just a few days and appreciate all the experience I read about. Despite having read advice about these topics elsewhere in this website, I still have questions of clarification, and ask for your patience.
Hopefully we can all help.. looks as though you are getting awesome advice already. :)
a. I personally dispute the OC (a letter stating that you don't know where this account came from, request for original contract etc..) or CA (DV letter)first. Once you recieve the green card back from that letter, send the the disputes to the CRA's. This will assist you in documenting more violations to use as leverage to get the TL's off the CR. :)
b. Does each dispute require a separate letter for each item on a particular CR? e.g.: if a CR shows 15 disputable accts., does that mean I should send 15 letters? And should each be by Registered mail w/ receipt?
I would reccomend disputing half of the TL you are looking to correct or delete at a time. That way you always have something to work on. Certainly send them CMRRR. It is very important to keep awesome documentation!
c. If I can send several disputes in one letter, what is a rule of thumb as to how many to include before it annoys the checker at the CR? I have 13 disputable accts., one incorrect birthdate and 1 hard inquiry. And I’m in a hurry, ‘natch.
Dispute all of your personal information first before you dispute TLs. Make sure there is only one addy listed (the one you are currently at) correct name spellings etc... Then dispute the TL with the CRA. As I said before. I would do half at one time. :)
Well.. it depends on your objective. You may try to get them marked as paid with no laid payments, or attempt to contact the OC or CA to negotiate and update to such. It may harm your scores, but most people's objective is to have a perfect credit file... so if this is yours.. you wanna try for "Paid" or deletion and no negative info in the tradeline.
e. Anyone have any feedback on INNOVIS, a CRA in Ohio?

I have not personally, but I am sure someone around here has. You may want to do a search.

f. Etiquette-wise, should all these questions be separate posts?
No.. just make sure you always break them up a bit (as you did here) so we can get through the whole thing without going crosseyed! :)

Good Luck Good Luck!!! :) -Jenn
