Help! Okay here's the problem. I recently got electric service again. I had to pay the deposit of 200. no big deal. well b/c I had an account they had just closed, like one month prior, that was joint with my husband, I guess they put this account joint also.

well I called to see what the bill was, and it was way more than it was supposed to be. They said my husband owed a bill from 1998, that is in collections (b/c its on his credit report) and they added it to my bill. ??????

Since we are married. I said they couldn't do that, and wanted it removed. They said the only way it could be removed is if I brought a copy of my marriage license and a separtation or divorce notice, then they would remove the bill. HOw can I have to pay this.? anyways this is in collections? and its from 1998???? what about the SOL?

what do I do?

First, SOL doesn't mean the debt goes away. It just means if they should sue you to try to collect, you have an absolute defense. Any other collection activity can continue.

Your last paragraph is a little jumbled. Are you no longer married to this guy? If so, then do as they suggest and take them a copy of your divorce papers that show you're not responsible for his debt...

we are still married. it just seems that i gotta suck it up and bend over :(

okay so since the debt is in collections and has been forever it seems, and i am having to pay it on my regular utility bill, then i guess there is no "pay for delete" isn't it going to start the clock over, when the electric company reports it as "paid"--? or atleast make the score tank even worse since it is like "activity" on the account

thanks for all your help!
