aints68
Does the seven year rule apply for old addresses and employers or is this a lifetime compilation in one's credit file. I have a really old address in mine that I honestly don't ever remember having, and I'm having trouble getting them to remove it. I have asked nicely on several occasions over the years, but it doesn't seem to go away. I was hoping that the age-out rule would apply to personal info so that I could legally force them to remove it if I have to. A similar situation has happened to a friend of mine, but with an old employer listing. It was never his, it belonged to his brother and they were joint on a loan eons ago. But now he's trying to figure out how to get this off of his report. He has not actually contacted the cra about it yet though. Any feedback on this will be much appreciated. THANKS!!! miracle
Aints.... have you tried calling the CRA directly and telling them the address is not yours and you don't recognize it as a past address? I would call until you get a Customer Service person that are happy to delete it for you. It may take a couple calls.. but usually that is about the only time I advocating calling the CRA. Give that a try and see what happens. Good Luck! -Jenn

aints68
I'm going to call them and try over the phone, but I was hoping that there was some kind of law for really old stuff that I could use to help me.

aints68
Called, but I got an uncooperative rep. Should I call back and hope for someone different, or do these reps make notes when you call to forewarn the other reps?
jq26
aints, I have little work to do today so I'm answering all your posts (as much as I can!)...I wrote TU, EXP, and EQ and told them to remove old addresses. I told them I never lived there. Here's what happened:TU removed all of them right away. Experian didn't even acknoeldge me. I will have to follow up with them.Equifax removed a few and sent me a letter saying they were fraudulent. But then an OLD address became my CURRENT address with them again as of last Monday and my Equifax score dropped 41 points. I have a feeling an old creditor added negative info and reaged, dropping my score. So in my experience, some CRAs will and some won't remove old info...but be persistent!! aints68
Thanks for answering back with the help. Much appreciated. I guess I'll just keep trying on this one. I told my friend to call about the wrong employment info, but I'm afraid he's going to have a much harder time with this that with an old address. Thanks again! jq26
No problem. My employment info is all wrong too, but I can't figure how that would affect me so I'm letting that go for now. Its the old addresses that I'm trying to remove since they are tied to some not so desirable TLs that I'm attempting to get deleted. Good luck Aints

aints68
Badcreditman:I still haven't found out if there is any law about this but I've kept searching and here is what I'm finding:1. Old addresses don't affect your credit score, but to a lender they could look like instability if you have a lot of them or if one of them has been reported in the last year and conflicts with how long you've been at your current address.2. If any of your previous addresses are tied to a good credit tradeline, DON"T DISPUTE IT. If the CRA takes it off, they might also delete your positive credit. This will probably lower your score and you'll lose an older established account.3. If the address is only tied to negative tradelines, dispute the tradeline first as you are doing know. If you are successful in getting this tradeline deleted from your account, then you should be able to get the address deleted in a new dispute because if there is no one on your report that is using this address, then they can't verify it and should remove it.Now that I have found this out, I know what I need to do about mine, and my friend will probably leave the wrong employer info in his file because it is tied to an 8 year old good tradeline that he needs to keep (positive accounts stay in your file for 10 years whereas negative ones stay for 7). I have found out this info by continuing to search old posts, so now I realize that removing old stuff is not always a good idea until you know what consequences it will have. I did not know this before and when you are first starting out everything you read tells you to remove old info like this. I was going on this theory, but now thanks to a lot of learned people on this board, I see that it pays to understand what you are doing before you do it. In a round about way, I have found my answers except that no one was able to tell me if there is any law about this. Maybe if there is someone will be reading this post and let us know.Hope this helps you!

dasani08810
I think the only real advantage to getting rid of old addresses is to eliminate the possiblity of a potential creditor searching public records databases in places you used to live. I'm not sure if Lexis Nexis is a national database with all information at the ready, or if they perform public record searches on request in the areas one used to live. aints68
that brings up another intersting thing then. If you go get a mortgage, how far back do your public records get searched? I have some really old stuff on public records that is long gone now but since I live in the same county, I don't want it to come back and bit me in the butt. aints68
Just found a new trick from experian.. My address also had a notation that it was a business address. The way it read made it sound like it was not a residence at all. I called experian to dispute. Rep said what that meant was if that address had ever received any business mail that it would be reported that way, even if it was from previous tenents/owners. She said it could not be taken out, but I did press on this one. I said, "I guess I'll have to go to postmaster here and get written verifiication that this is not a business address." Then she said, "I'll go ahead and take this out". Checked my report again and the notation is gone, but if this is coming from some other source, it will probably show up again. She said it didn't affect my score, but you know that when someone reviews the file (like a mortgage lender) they are going to see this. It could be a problem, especially for those of you that are using a private mailbox place for your new address. Just thought I would pass this along. bad credit man
Experian says they will take the address off then I check my cr they are gone and then there back on there. Why is that.
aints68
I'm not sure why the addresses come back, but here is what I suspect. You said that you had old address removed but the tradeline for that address is still in your cr. I think that address is tied in to that tradeline so as long as the tradeline keeps updating to the cra, the address will keep popping in. You might could try calling the tradeline directly and try to get them to change it to your current address, but I don't know how that will work. Could be risky.
