What is the time line for collections being off you credit in Texas? I got out of a apartment lease in 2000 and have not heard from anyone in a while. The agency called allot and were really rude with me. I found a clause in the lease and used it to get out of the lease.

If you got out out of the lease, why did the complex turn your account over to a CA?

I would file a formal complaint against the complex with your state Attorney General.

Negative information stays on your report for 7 years (7 years plus 180 days for charge offs).

This is not the same as the SOL for which they can collect. In Texas, it looks like 4 years across the board, so they're attempting to collect (ie: extorting you) on a debt that you are no longer obligated to pay.

The complex had some recent thefts and a murder a while back. I read the lease and found a safety clause. It said at any time we did not feel safe we could nego the lease. We did and the manager said it would be fine. I was transferring and my wife and daughter would have had to stayed there. We took her up on the offer!! The CA stated the complex turned us over to them and they want the money. I disputed the charges with them and only got a head ache. This back in 2000 and I am not sure if their is recent activity. How do you check for recent activity on a collection? The time it will be off my credit will start at the last activity right?

Just file a complaint against the apartment complex's management company and the CA with your state Attorney General.

They may be cocky enough to give you a hard time, but they'll behave like good little boys and girls when they see the "request for information" letter with the State Seal cross their desk.

Somebody messed up and turned this into a consumer protection issue. You don't need to go through more headache to get it corrected.
