Average Joe
Thanks to everyone for all your help. This is alway a great resource when you get "stuck" and don't know where to go next. That is where I am right now, so I would appreciate some help from all the veterans out there.I've been wrangling with a TL being reported by ASSet Acceptance for a few months now. The TL is scheduled to fall off my CR in March of next year, but I'm trying to get it removed. In my efforts, I have discovered that ASSet is NOT liscensed to do debt collection in my state (NC)! All this time, they've been reporting this TL, and they aren't even legal here! This brings me to my question: If they are not liscensed in this state, do they have to cease and desist all collection activities, and most importantly, are they allowed to even LIST my TL on the CRBs? According to the rep at the Insurance Commisioners office they are not allowed to do this, but I thought that I would do some double checking with my friends here at the boards! Thanks guys!Joe

miracle
if they are operating illegally in your state, save the documentation to prove this and send them a letter pointing it out. Usually the TL disappears off of your account very quickly. Also report them to the AG's office, FTC.. anyone you can. I bet if you do a search you will probably find more detailed info.. but NO.... They aren't allowed to collect if they aren't following the law.
CreditSuperstar
Joe...How did I KNOW this thread was from you??? lolDid you call the AG yet?
HeartRN
They only update that list online quarterly. I would call Elizabeth Guido at the NC DOI or email her to make sure. eguido@ncdoi.net You can file a complaint with them online also here... http://www.ncdoi.com/Consumer/Consumer.asp
Average Joe
Thanks Heart. I appreciate the good contact info! I actually don't fully trust the government with ANYTHING (not very surprising, I'm sure! LOL!), so I did call them after I looked it up online. The rep that I spoke with was very helpful and said that ASSet did apply some time ago to do business in NC, but it was never approved. to ASSet!! I feel so sorry for them.......NOT!! I guess I'll be sending them a nice little letter, cc'd to our AG, FTC, etc informing them that I caught them with their fat little fingers in the cookie jar and that they need to remove this TL ASAP! Thanks everyone!
