Sounds like AT&T is just shopping for new customers.
CreditSuperstar
Haven't opted out yet. Going to! However, they would still have pp if I haven't? I don't do business with them. I understand a company I do business may be allowed sell some info to them, but are they allowed to pull a report?
breathing_easier
Yes, if you haven't opted out companies are allowed to look at your reports for promotional purposes. A "soft pull" does not need permissible purpose (has no effect on FICO). The CRAs make some $$$ by charging these companies for the privilege of looking at your reports. That's why you get all those nifty pre-approved cc offers (ugh) in the mail. And those offers that say "we can help you rebuild your credit." The way they know that you're having credit trouble is that they've paid to peek at your reports. Once you opt out the soft pulls for promotional purposes will stop. Soft pulls after opting out will primarily be from your current lenders doing account reviews.I opted out two years ago and love it. They say it also aids in preventing identity theft. Another good reason to opt out (and why it is often cited as the #1 thing to do when you're starting the credit repair process) is that CAs cruise your reports looking to see if you're applying for anything big, like a mortgage or auto (by looking at the hard inquiries). They will then slap a TL on your reports because they know most secured lenders will require that any chargeoffs or unpaid collections be paid before they will close the loan.
