Cards before turning 18

Recommended Posts

Each receipt that is signed when a credit card is used is a promise to pay back that amount; IOW, a contract. If they granted you credit before you turned 18, then any transactions made until you turned 18 could be voided. Otherwise, IMO you're liable for any receipts you signed after you turned 18.

You could probably find a way to make the contract null and void because you were a minor, but that requires court. Until then, your lates are your lates. The credit bureaus don't care that you were a minor. You will have to take this up with the lender.

You should note that while the contract for the card itself may be voidable and any purchases made on it BEFORE you were 18 may be voidable, anything purchased on the card after your 18th you will still be liable for. Furthermore some courts have held that by making payments on purchases after your 18th you have reaffirmed the purchase and it can no longer be voided.

Good point.
