You Don’t Ask, You Don’t Get...

Something that I thought I would not do but I ended up bouncing three checks. My credit union covered the checks and I immediately put cold hard cash in that account.

My bank is on the lower end of bounced check fees. They charge 20 clams per bounced check but still, 60 clams is still a sore loss for me. I called them up and asked if they could remove those three fees. I remember they had done that years ago and called a one time courtesy. The customer service rep said no because it had to be a mistake on the credit union’s part but that she would check with her manager anyway. A few minutes later, she said that she would refund “half” of the fees.

Well, losing 30 clams is sure a lot better than losing 60 so I thanked her.

But it goes to show that if you don’t ask, then you don’t get.

The worst thing that someone can say is no. And back in my single days, I used to get “no” as an answer quite a bit so my bank telling me “no” is not a problem at all.

Good point. My approach is a little different; I try to avoid the bounce check fees altogether by asking for overdraft protection on every checking account that I have.

I have 3 checking accounts, and I have applied for overdraft line of credit protection on 2 of those. The last one, DCU, does it free of charge and without pulling an inquiry if you have either or both of savings account and DCU Visa. You can even specify which order you want the overdraft protection applied; savings first, or Visa first. No cash advance fee either if you choose Visa first ... makes it such a sweet deal.
