JenShea
I have on my EX CR an account from an Electric company that was originally opened in 1997, date reported 12/04. I am not sure how this could be possible with the SOL? Is it possbile that they kept up with this old account to be sure to report it 7 years out? Would a good first step be to dispute and then PR the CRA for the details to see about the SOL, OR, write a letter to the CO to dispute? I do remember disputing this with EX in June 05, but their response was less than one that I could understand - something about, Please refer to your credit report for update. No update that I could ever see. Please advise. Thanks
NefertitiX
Unless I am reading this wrong, this was reported in 1997...if that's also when the account was closed this is beyond the 7.5 year reporting period. Dispute this with the CRAs as beyond the legal reporting limit. That's what I'd do...
divemedic
It depends. Was this account OPENED in 1997?The 7 years starts from charge off, which should be no later than 180 days from when it went delinquent and stayed that way.
Methuss
In general the Uniform Commercial Code limits the collection of utility bills to 2 years. As NefertitiX states, they also cannot continue to report any unpaid debt on a credit report past 7.5 years.
