Case law vs. forms and presentation?

What do you think ultimately wins law suits....volumes of case law...or knowledge of your court's rules, forms and fillings combined with the ability to orally argue your case to a judge?? I have sued numerous times (for various reasons) and have never presented case law. I have relied on good debate skills and the ability to anticipate my defendants defenses and counter them. It helps that the Texas state statutes are online for free and in an easy to search fashion. You don't even have to go to the law library anymore to look up statutes! Looking for opinions since I have only experienced one perspective.
