Collections Notice for $17k to ME and My Small Business ???

I've been battling with PSEG for the past year and a half over a bill for services I never received.

Long story short:

I'm receiving a collections notice from PSE&G (utilities company in NJ) for $17K. This is for services I never received. In fact, it's regarding an estimated bill from a meter that PSE&G can't find. Apparently, when their service tech went in to install new meters, he improperly removed the old one and didn't record it correctly. Now they can't find it. They were supposed to adjust the bill (which should have been $0) and send it to me. Instead they referred it to their legal counsel who is demanding the $17k. The bill is for a property that was in my LLC's (small company) name. The property has since been sold. The account was never in my name, only the LLC's. Yet they are including my name on the collection notice. I'm pretty sure I can successfully fight this in court. But I DEFINITELY don't want this thing on my name in case I lose. The LLC in question is no longer in use so it doesn't matter if there's a judgment against it.

Should I have my attorney deal with this matter and have my individual name removed as the debtor or should I respond on my own? If I do iton my own, how do I get my individual name removed from the matter? Thx in advance.

I thought the whole point of a Limited Liability company was that the owner was not personally liable for the company's bills or assets, like a corporation. Unless the laws are a bit different in ME.

An individual can still make themselves personally liable no matter how their business is set up (LLC, Corporation, S-Corp, etc).

I don't know of it's the case here but if a utility refueses to turn on service without a personal guarantee then you either personally guarantee it or you don't get sevice...same things with loans/financing, etc.
