How will the make the score look? It cant be worse then it is but will it be hard to ever get financed for a home with settlements? Thanks

OC, CA, JDB? If its the OC, and you get it in writing (before you send money), and it includes "...the balance will not be resold...", you might be ok. If its PFD, then that's even better...If its a CA or JDB...think long and hard about sending either money. They can't fix any negative the OC is planting, and you really can't trust them to even do what they say...

DH has on his report Nextel for 501$ from 2002, well its now AFNI who has it today they contacted me to say that I could settle for 250 or just make 3 payments for 163 and then they will put it on our credit as paid in full. I asked for writing and he said when its paid in full they will notate it as that. I have no idea what too do, take a settlement and have that on my report or pay it in full. Once I pay it dont they have to report it as paid? He also said that as of today they "cease collection" since I will make 3 payments....
willingtocope
Okay, well the first thing to do is stop talking to them on the phone. Get everything in writing...if its not in writing (or, if you didn't record the phone conversation), it didn't happen. You just can't trust these people...And then the next thing you want to do is clear up whether AFNI has purchased the debt from Nextel, or is acting as a Collection Agency for Nextel. If they're a CA, then don't discuss it with them at all. Send them a DV letter (just to keep them busy) and call Nextel. AFNI can't speak for Nextel, and if Nextel is reporting on your CRs, then settling anything with AFNI won't do anything about the Nextel TL...and that's what you'd like to clean up.If they're a JDB, then you can't do anything about the Nextel TL, but, you need to take the attitude that just because you had an account with Nextel doesn't mean that AFNI has the right person. JDB buy in bulk and they screw up all the time. They count on debtors just coughing up money...Either way, I'd start with the DV process.

So I should just call nextel because I did that at first and they said they could NOT talk to me that I had to call the CA.
willingtocope
Alright, then it sounds like AFNI is just a CA, and the debt is still owned by Nextel. Honestly, when an OC refuses to talk with you, I'm not exactly sure what to do. If it were me, I'd send a DV letter to AFNI...and then call Nextel back and ask to speak to a supervisor. You might even want to record the convesation. If you get the same run around, I would tell them that you will not deal with a CA, and if they want their money, they will have to talk with you directly. It might wind up costing the full amount, but in the long run, its so much safer...
