Capital One and past collections...

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Capital One keeps sending me preapproval letters which is a good thing. The bad thing is that about 5 and a half years ago I had 2 credit cards through them that went into collections and were never paid. I would like to get back in their good graces, but I'm nervous about my old bad debts.

Is it possible for them to tack on my old account balances if I accepted the new card? My credit has been clean for the last few years, I would hate to open a new account and have it show over limit on my credit report.

Thanks,

Eddie

I had a similar situation, although I never got pre-approval letters from them. Back in 2000 I had a $300 card with them which went to collections and then charge-off. It now shows on my CR a $609 balance. I applied for a CapOne card in August 06 and was initially given a $300 limit, but have received a $200 cli since. It doesn't seem that my past charge-off through with them has affected me at all.

Why dont you get another credit card other than capital one.

search the board if the report is clean try some one else

Hooters, target. Capital one is very sleazy. My credit report list two accounts from capital one one a charge off from 2003 and one paid as agreed from 2002. I have only had one account with them the charge off account is an old chase account that they bought and open up a credit card in my name with the chase balance. They said I agreed to it.

I know I am not that stupid.

do a search on Capital one.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I already have a merrick bank, an orchard bank, a household bank, a best buy, and a jc penny card. I was interested in a capital one card because they do have prime cards for down the road. I really don't feel I need more credit cards, just higher credit limits. I've had the household card for over 4 years, I've never been late, and the CL is only $600 and they want to CHARGE ME $25 for an extra hundred dollar CL increase.

I get preapprovals all the time for other cards but I'm not about to pay monthly "participation fees". Capital One sent me a pre approval for a card with only a 39 dollar annual fee.

I have old unpaid collections and charge offs that started around 5 years ago on my report so I already seem to have exhausted my supply of bad credit friendly creditors.

I have both Household and Orchard. HH has made increases on their own without me asking and i haven't been charged. I've had it for abotu 4 yrs. AT the beginning I did pay the minimum as I was in a tight situation but now my payments are at least $100 a month. It's gone from 300 to 775 on its own, I mean that's not much but I dont' see why they are charging you.

Slow eddie,

I use true credit like most people here. I also have score watch which gives me a fico score for my Equifax report whenever there is a change.

Plus i must admit I am totally addicted to CIC could be worst at least it is not ROH or other drugs. I get an Experian and Transunion fico score report whenever I have a few CO or collections account removed.

What's going on with you and Merrick?

See this thread.

Basically, on Sunday, I see on EX that Merrick has reported me with a CURRENT chargeoff in December even though I paid them. I got a slew of adverse actions last month (ratejacked and CLD) when they re-reported.

It took them TWO YEARS to answer my request for statements, and they only did it with an FDIC complaint. They never marked my account in dispute, and in California, OCs are subject to (most of, but marking a tradeline in dispute is one of them) the same rules as CAs in the RFDCPA.

All of this over a disputed bill. :(

There is, btw, a different account status for "account paid in full, was a charge-off." I don't know if it's scored differently, but it probably is considered differently during a manual review.

So, I have my lawsuit all ready to file in federal on Jan 8 if they don't give me the right answer before then.

Yeah, its BS. Their customer service people are the worst. I can barely understand their accent. 4 frickin years of on time payments, never over limit, and I still have a $600 limit. I've had the Orchard card almost 2 years and I've only seen one increase and I've never been late or over limit. Even worse the increases have been a measely $100 at a time. It's insulting at this point. I haven't had a late payment or an over limit charge in over 4 years.

I decided to pass on the Capital One card. Its not worth the risk, especially for a card that doesn't report your credit limit. Also after reading an article about capital one on this site it seems their goal is to offer me more cards rather than increase my credit limit.

Thanks,

Eddie

Yep, it is BS. I would love to drop both HH & Orchard but unfortunately they are my two oldest CC. :(
