CA collecting for Columbia House..

I got a letter from a CA collecting $25 for Columbia House (CH). I have not dealt with CH since high school (17 years ago). The CA claimed the debt was reported in 2004. This is my first knowledge of it. It is not on any credit reports from the big three either. I sent them a letter stating the debt is not mine and asking for a copy of the original contract with complete terms of service and payment history as well as a list of purchases.

I know they will not be able to produce this.

This debt may be mine from 17+ years ago, but the 2004 date makes we think it could be a mistake. What is the best way to go about handling this? It is not alot of money, but paying it now will only result in a late pay on the CR, and it really may not be mine.

SO far my plan is...

1. See what the DV shows

2. Negotiate a pay for no reporting, in writing?

Principles aside, $25 is cheaper than a lawsuit (mine) and a 12-18 month wait for a court date. Thanks for any replies.

Yeah, well, see that's what keeps the CAs and JDBs in business. I gotta beleive that at least half of what they collect is flat out bogus.

Everybody got suckered into Columbia House at one time or another. If I were a less than honest CA, I'd just collect names and send everyone a past due notice...if only 10% paid, I'd be rich.

My suggestion is stick to your guns (even for $25)...this ain't yours, and even if it was, its long since uncollectable.

If the DV doesn't come back with your signature on it, don't pay. If they pursue the matter...sue...it ain't yours.

I noticed about a month ago that CCS listed a collection for $85 for Columbia House. I never received a letter or anything from anybody. I did the online dispute and I also sent a dv letter. They received the dv letter on 4/12 and the TU report came back verified, WITHIN 10 DAYS!

Should I just wait on the info to come back, then sue?
