I assume that this is in state court. You need to go back to the clerk and note your appeal. They will then make you pay an appeal bond, which is the amount they CA got plus interest and the filing fee. Then you get your appeal to the next level of state court.

But if she had the funds to pay this, why would she be appealing? I guess I don't understand the "Appeal Bond" process. Would you care to explain more when you get a moment? I don't understand the concept of forcing someone to pay what they probably can't afford just because they request an Appeal.

Thanks.

In VA, that's the way the appeal process works. If she was the plaintiff, then she would pay the filing fee and be done with it and get her appeal. But, I am under the asumption that she was the defendant, which requires her to pay the fees regulated by the court, which includes the amount of the judgment and interest, plus filing fees.

If you're going to appeal, you need have good grounds. That's one reason for the bond. Otherwise, people would drag every penny-ante case through the appeal system just to avoid paying for one more day. If you don't have a good case that an error in the application of the law was made in your case, you should think twice before filing an appeal. Remember, you generally can't appeal a question of fact.
